Design for Albert Memorial

Perspective drawing for Albert Memorial. Prince Albert died in Dec 1861 and designs were invited for a memorial hall and monument. It is not clear whether this perspective represents one of these or a combination of both. The base is an immense podium with battered sides, on it another podium with couchant lions at each corner, above this rises a single-story block with battered walls, each side pierced with a bank of linked windows, the tower culminating in a ribbed dome. The immense size of the battered doorways and the low relief on the walls recalls Egyptian temples. The competition was won by Sir Gilbert Scott.

Various high-rise buildings in a hill-like formation. Appears to be a monument with six levels and a long cuboid at the top. Gated lot with street lamps surrounding it in the foreground. "The Forerunner by Merejkowski" is written at the top right which is the second novel in a trilogy by Dmitry Merezhkovsky titled "The Romance of Leonardo da Vinci" originally published in 1900. "Merejkowski" written four times below. Helen Biggar did illustrations for a later edition of this novel published after 1926.

Hugh Ferguson Notebooks

Hugh Ferguson graduated from Glasgow School of Art/Architecture in 1955. His collection of papers includes a notebook of 'Descriptive Geometry' from The Royal Technical College containing notes and detailed mathematical drawings.

Ferguson received the Alexander Thompson Travelling Scholarship in 1964 and another notebook/sketchbook documents his travels over one month in Greece - from 15th of August to 5th September 1964. Two weeks were spent resident in Athens and two weeks travelling; he visited many sites including Delphi, Eleusis, Daphni, Ossios Loukas, Brauron, Mycanae, Tiryns, Pylos, Epidauros, Olympia and Corinth. Detailed notes are given on the work going on at these sites, accompanied by around 33 photographs of ongoing architectural work.

Loose papers include information on the life and works of Alexander Thompson as well as a draft of the text for the final bound travel notebook.
