San Gimignano correspondence

Conrad McKenna’s correspondence and materials relating to The Glasgow Summer School held in San Gimignano during his various teaching roles at The Glasgow School of Art. Including a combination of typed and hand written materials, newspaper clippings, floor plans and printed ephermera. Including correspondence in English and Italian with: The Scott Sutherland School of Architecture, Robert Gordons Institute of Technology, Universita Italiana per Stranieri, Provincial Tourist Office – Sienna, Societa Dante Alighieri, Convento S. Agostino, Comune Di Bresica, Intercultural and Permanent Education Centre (San Gimignano),  and Professor Mario Serchi. Correspondence generally details travel and accommodation arrangements, itineraries and costings for The Summer School at San Gimignano alongside its relationships and partnerships with individuals and institutions. Selections of correspondence detail Italian students’ visit to Scotland. Also includes correspondence with the Intercultural and Permanent Education Centre, San Gimignano, detail Draft Articles of Association; an account of The Glasgow Summer School in 1969 by Douglas Percy Bliss, which describes San Gimignano, the Church of Saint Agostino where the school was held and accommodated and the school’s interaction with the local population. A typed account of the origins of The Summer School at San Gimignano by Conrad McKenna is also included. Printed ephemera includes two brochures from 1969 and 1971 detailing itineraries, arrangements and costs of The Glasgow Summer School.

GSA Fashion Shows

A number of the GSA fashion shows were filmed and some of these films are held by GSA Archives and Collections, namely the films for 1978, 1982, 1984, 1985 and 1986. These show models on the stage plus in some cases backstage footage and/or stills, and the audience arriving at the venue. For four of the films held by GSA Archives and Collections, the soundtracks have been incorporated at the editing stage and reflect the songs played at the show.

GSA Fashion Show film

This film comprises both the 1982 and 1984 fashion show films. The only exception is that the instrumental section with no images, at the end of the 1984 film, is not included here. Audiovisual material

GSA Archives and Collections hold 216 audiovisual files, covering a range of topics and a wide date range. The audiovisual material has been created both by GSA and by external organisations, such as the BBC (television and radio), STV and ITV, other educational institutions and the Scottish Arts Council. Media in the collection include 16mm films, 35mm films, audio cassettes, audio CDs, CD Rom, DV cassette, DVD, Floppy disk, Reel to reel audios, Super 8 film, U-matic films, VHS tapes and Video 8 tapes. The audiovisual files pertain to topics including the GSA Fashion and Degree Shows, and Activities Week; students discussing their work; lectures by architects; presentations by, and interviews and conversations with, GSA alumni; centenary of the Mackintosh Building; Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh; plays; and documentaries on GSA. Please note that this material is not yet fully catalogued and therefore some items may not be accessible to researchers. As at August 2017, only the fashion show audiovisual material has been catalogued. The remaining uncatalogued material is therefore not currently accessible for researchers.

Poster for a talk entitled 'Landscape Photography' given by Thomas Joshua Cooper

This poster advertised a lecture by Thomas Joshua Cooper which was organised by The Glasgow School Of Art's graphic design department. Cooper works at The Glasgow School Of Art as head of fine art photography and is regarded as an authoritative figure in his field. The talk was held in the Mackintosh Lecture Theatre within The Glasgow School Of Art on Friday the 29th of October 1993.

Poster for a debate entitled 'Art School Creates No Prospects'

This poster advertised a debate which dealt with the positive and negative aspects of studying at The Glasgow School Of Art which was held in the Mackintosh Lecture Theatre on the 8th of December 1976. Speaking for the school in the debate included Roger Hoare, Mike Roschlau, Tom Lyden and Vladimir Soukoup. Speaking against were Dugald Cameron, Julian Gibb, Colin McNaught and Jim Cathcart. Harry J. Barnes was the chairperson. The poster states: "The Motion: This house believes that this art school creates no prospects, no jobs, no firm conclusions, no hopes, few aspirations, little money, nothing but nostalgia..." The poster was printed by Bob Stewart who was a senior lecturer in design at The Glasgow School Of Art at this time.

Poster for a lecture by Emilio Coia

This poster advertised a lecture given by the Scottish artist and illustrator Emilio Coia. Coia was born in Glasgow and studied at The Glasgow School Of Art. He is recognised for his work for The Edinburgh Fringe Festival as well as the Scotsman newspaper. Coia was elected as president of The Glasgow Art Club, a role which he held until his death in 1997. This lecture focused on Coia's surreal drawings of famous buildings, with a particular focus on the Sydney Opera House, and was held at The Glasgow School Of Art on the 19th of February 1973.

Poster advertising Activities Week

This poster advertised various events happening during The Glasgow School Of Art's activities week in 1971. The poster details a number of film screenings and talks which took place in the Mackintosh Lecture Theatre. Other events included visits to the National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride and to an exhibition of prints by the London based printmaking organisation Editions Alecto. There was also an exhibition of work by John McInnes which was held in the Mackintosh Museum.

Poster for GSA Fashion Show

This is a poster for the 3rd year Textiles Fashion Show held at 7pm and 9pm each night from 8th-9th Mar 2011 . The event was accompanied by a boutique and secret postcard sale with an aftershow party held at the Buff Club. The event was sponsored by Mandors Fabric Store, Buchanan Galleries shopping centre, PRI and Mash amplification. One of the themes of this year's fashion show was the Newbery Tower, which was due for demolition during the School's summer vacation in 2011. The Archives also hold digital images of the secret postcard sale, which involved the selling of postcards created by past and present students on the theme of the Newbery Tower.

Poster for The Glasgow School Of Art activities week

This item forms part of a large scale poster advertising The Glasgow School Of Art's 1986 activities week. This portion of the poster advertises a fashion show which was held in the school's Assembly Hall from the 10th to the 15th of March. Tickets were priced at £2.50 with a £1 discount for concessions. Taylor Fegusson hairdressers were responsible for styling the model's hair and the set was designed by the Royal Scottish Academy Of Music And Drama.

This poster is part of a course project organised by the Visual Communications department. The brief for the project required students to design a poster for a particular film they had been assigned. In this example, student Essi Kimpanyaki has designed a poster for the film 'Kapurush'. To create the poster Kimpanyaki has used screen printmaking techniques.

Ephemera collection

Includes catalogues, programmes, flyers and tickets for Glasgow School of Art exhibitions, pageants, lectures and theatrical events as well as posters from Activities Week events and student fashion shows, dating from 1890 to the present. Ephemera also includes a collection of postcards from c1900 to the present, as well as material relating to: Glasgow School of Art's involvement with the international exhibition scene; records of the Woman's Work Exhibition, London, 1900; records of the Glasgow School of Art participation in the Glasgow International Exhibition, 1901; the Exhibition of Modern Furniture, Budapest, 1902; the Brussels Exhibition, 1910; and papers documenting the organisation of the Scottish Pavilion at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts, Turin, 1902. Some of the material is in French and Italian.

The Glasgow School of Art photographic collection consists of

  • images taken by GSA to record the activities of the School
  • images taken for publicity purposes
  • images donated by former staff and students illustrating their time at the School
  • and images used as teaching aids at GSA.

Some of this material is currently uncatalogued and therefore not accessible for researchers.

The photographic collections consist of loose photographs, bound albums of photographs and a large collection of lantern slides and glass plate negatives.

The photographs record events at The Glasgow School of Art, its students and their work and act as an important historical source. A large part of the collection consists of the plate glass negatives which were used from the 19th century onwards as a teaching aid and consist of photographic plates of international artworks and architectural examples.

We have identified people depicted in these photographs where possible. Please get in touch if you spot any inconsistencies, omissions or errors, and we will edit descriptions accordingly.
