'Field Marshall Death' from the songs and dances of death
Image of grim reaper riding a horse. This was one of a set of prints/ illustrations made for Mussorgsky's song cycle "Songs & Dances of Death" for a solo exhibition in the former Blythswood Gallery in Blythswood Square, Glasgow, which was opened by Emilio Coia in 1960. Among those who bought the prints were George Singleton ("Mr. Cosmo"), Emilio Coia and Jack Coia the architect.

Two painted figures in ink and gouache mounted onto white card. Design one shows an abstract face painted in coloured inks and white gouache. Design two shows an abstract face painted in black ink and purple, blue and cream gouache.
Some of this material was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. Paper conservation took place in 2018. Textile conservation was completed in 2019.

Ink is applied in washes to the surface of the paper, blue opaque gouache renders the background leaving floral shapes to reveal the ink underneath. Black acrylic is used to outline the organic shapes and loosely create a checked pattern in the background. Paper backed on conservation board.
