This glazed ceramic egg cup was created by Robert Sinclair Thomson (1915–1983), a painter, draughtsman, potter, and teacher, during his career as both an artist and educator in Glasgow.
The piece features a turquoise glaze on the inside, contrasting with a brown-glazed exterior. Its wide base is decorated with brown and black glaze, and encircled by a raised band of tan clay balls. The bottom is engraved with the initials “ST” and a circle with an X—markings likely representing the artist and a maker’s mark.
Thomson was a well-liked teacher of drawing and painting at the School of Art from 1960 until ill-health prompted his retirement in 1975.
