McDonald’s Christmas Gifts

This design for a catalogue cover was made for McDonald’s department store in Glasgow, by GSA alumna Garcia Hunter.

She studied at GSA in the 1920s then worked in advertising before setting up her own studio in West Regent Street in Glasgow.  She drew illustrations and advertisements for a number of Glasgow newspapers, and had advertisements commissioned by department stores such as Watt Brothers and Frasers, plus furriers and ladies’ outfitters.  This was unusual for a woman in that era.

She was well-known for her Garcia Girl page, drawing fashions from functions she attended on Friday nights for the Monday edition of the Daily Record newspaper, popular with women who bought the newspaper to see who was that week’s chosen Garcia Girl.

We hold a wide range of Garcia Hunter’s works in our collection, including fashion and jewellery sketches and illustrations, product catalogues, news cuttings and photographs.
