Poster for an exhibition of work by postgraduate students

This poster advertised an exhibition of work by postgraduate fine art students which was held in the Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School Of Art from the 23rd to the 29th of June 1990. The show included work by Marta Estrella, Martyn Greenhalgh, Christopher Hoddinott, Brigitte Jurack, Richard Learoyd, Rachel Meehan, Gregory Patterson, Robert Stark and Euan Sutherland. The poster was designed at The Glasgow School Of Art and printed at David J Clark Limited. The image used on the poster was taken by Richard Learoyd and shows a number of students including: - Alex Dempster - Jim Hamlyn - Peter McCaughey - Craig Richardson - Julie Roberts - Andrew Sneddon - Eddie Stewart - Cathy Whippey The list of names was gathered with the help of Eddie Stewart who works as a tutor in the school's painting and printmaking department. Stewart previously graduated from the school with an undergraduate degree in drawing and painting and a postgraduate degree in fine art. He is pictured in The Glasgow School Of Art's degree show posters for 1988 and 1990, both of which appear in The Glasgow School Of Art poster collection. This item forms part of a large scale poster advertising The Glasgow School Of Art's 1986 activities week. This portion of the poster advertises a fashion show which was held in the school's Assembly Hall from the 10th to the 15th of March. Tickets were priced at £2.50 with a £1 discount for concessions. Taylor Fergusson hairdressers were responsible for styling the models' hair and the set was designed by the Royal Scottish Academy Of Music And Drama.

This item is the centre left section of a large scale poster advertising lectures given by Bob Godfrey and Joe McGrath during The Glasgow School Of Art's annual activities week in 1971. Bob Godfrey is best known for his animated cartoons such as Roobarb and Custard and Henry's Cat. Joe McGrath is a Scottish director famous for his films Casino Royal and The Magic Christian. The entire poster would have been one of many displayed on huge billboards on Renfrew Street to advertise events happening during each of The Glasgow School Of Art's annual activities weeks.

This poster advertised a ceilidh that was held in the Haldane Hall on the 19th of February 1972 as part of The Glasgow School Of Art's activities week. Activities week was an annual programme of talks, film screenings and social events that ran from 1971 to 1985. Playing at the ceilidh were a number of notable Scottish folk musicians including Cliff Hanley, Billy Connolly, Robin Hall, Jimmy McGregor and Charlie Williamson. This poster advertised the opening times of The Glasgow School Of Art student union, which is often referred to as The Vic Bar. The bar continues to be a large part of The Glasgow School Of Art community with a number of club nights, concerts and exhibitions being held there. The poster reads: "In the beginning there was darkness, and much dryness of many throats. Until a voice from the void said let there be cheap drink and the sound of many feet bopping it out on the floor. It gave us seven weeks to accomplish this task. Out from the depths came the chosen ones who stripped and screwed until on the seventh week came!!! A place of greatness. The hip, the hop, the thee place to be THE VIC. Hours of boozing service 11am - 2.30pm, 5pm - 11pm, with a licence to kill at the weekends - till 2.00am."

This poster advertised a retirement party arranged in honour of David A. Donaldson. Donaldson grew up in Coatbridge near Glasgow. He received a place at The Glasgow School Of Art at the age of fifteen despite having no formal qualifications and went on to become the head of drawing and painting in 1967. He was recognised for his portraiture, notably his portrait of Queen Elizabeth the Second in 1967. Donaldson remained at The Glasgow School Of Art until his retirement in 1981. The retirement party was held in The Glasgow Art Club on Bath Street in Glasgow on the 24th of June 1981. The poster was printed by Bob Stewart who was head of design at The Glasgow School Of Art at this time.

This poster advertised a retirement dinner for Lennox Paterson. Paterson worked at The Glasgow School Of Art between 1964 and 1979, occupying various roles including Head of Design and Deputy Head of the school. He was highly regarded for his wood engravings of animals and the poster features elements of this style. The event was held in the Bourdon Hall at The Glasgow School Of Art on the 20th of December 1979. This poster advertised two lectures focusing on films and film making which were given by both Joe McGrath and Bob Godfrey. The event was held in the Haldane building as part of The Glasgow School Of Art's annual Activities Week. Joe McGrath is known for his work as a director on films such as the 1967 version of Casino Royale, The Goon Show and Rising Damp. Bob Godfrey is an illustrator and animator, most famously known for his animation for children's television shows 'Roobarb' and 'Henry's Cat'. The poster is promoted on page 19 of The Glasgow School Of Art prospectus for 1972/73.

Dominating both posters is a quote from John Kenneth Galbraith who was a prominent economist during this period. The quote states "It is on the artistic not less than on the engineering and scientific excellence that economic security and economic progress now depend," The exhibition was held between The Mackintosh Museum on The Glasgow School Of Art Campus and Kelvingrove Art Gallery And Museum and ran from the 9th of February to the 1st of March 1985.
