Weaving Sample

Double-faced weaving sample with a geometric design of repeating bands of chevron-like figures. Woven with cotton thread in shades of blue and purple with supplementary warps in bright orange shades forming the pattern. A label is attached to the item which reads 'Samanth Goates, 1990', however, this is a misattribution.

This poster advertised the work of graduating students from The Glasgow School Of Art's embroidered and woven textiles department which was exhibited at the 1987 degree show. The exhibition ran from the 13th to the 18th of June and was held between The Glasgow School Of Art's Mackintosh Building and Newbery Tower.

Single-faced loosely woven fabric in shades of dark pink (warp), grey, teal and lemon, with ribbons of pale blue, pale pink and black woolen yarn incorporated. The inclusion of thicker fabric ribbons adds texture and pattern to the fabric and a light stripe effect is created using the claret pink warp threads.

GSA Fashion Show film

The 1986 Fashion Show was held in the Assembly Hall from 10th to 15th March 1986. The film comprises footage of students modelling on the stage. There is a mixture of men’s and women’s garments.  Styles and themes of garments include Egyptian, metallic, wedding, Queen of Hearts, cloaks, formalwear, masks, hats, bright colours, geometry, flamboyant, utility wear. There is also a dress made from Benson and Hedges cigarette packets – the model wearing this dress is smoking on stage. There were also a number of Harris Tweed garments in the show as Harris Tweed ran a design competition that year. Students involved in the show came from a variety of subject areas and years, including: Embroidery and Weaving; Silversmithing and Jewellery; and Printed Textiles. All the textiles students modelling designed garments for the show. It is believed that this show had a mix of professional models and students. The models were less experienced models from agencies. The set for the show consisted of a garage workshop setting with car and motor parts at the rear and sides of the stage. It was designed by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. The hair for this show was by Taylor Ferguson. The soundtrack for this film was added during the editing phase of the film and contains music which was played at the fashion show. This poster advertised the work of graduating embroidered and woven textiles students which was showcased in The Glasgow School Of Art degree show from the 14th to the 19th of June 1985. It was held in the Newbery Tower which housed the design departments within The Glasgow School Of Art before it was later replaced by the Reid Building.

Students involved in the show came from a variety of subject areas and years, including: Embroidery and Weaving; Fine Art; Sculpture; and Printed Textiles. All the textiles students modelling designed garments for the show. The set for the show consisted of a black background with white symbols. The soundtrack for this film was added during the editing phase of the film and contains music which was played at the fashion show. Sample woven in basketweave with fine white thread. Supplementary weft cords made of pink or blue yarn, white fabric ribbons and metallic-like threads form a pattern of stripes.

Two-faced woven sample. The face consists of a twill weave made with ribbons of a plain weave purple fabric and a finer satin weave fabric in shades of pink, brown and cream. The reverse, a plain weave in light purple and yellow yarn and ribbons of blue satin weave fabric, with machine-made diagonal running stitches in red thread to keep the weaving sample together.
