Some of this material is currently uncatalogued and therefore not accessible for researchers.

The photographic collections consist of loose photographs, bound albums of photographs and a large collection of lantern slides and glass plate negatives.

The photographs record events at The Glasgow School of Art, its students and their work and act as an important historical source. A large part of the collection consists of the plate glass negatives which were used from the 19th century onwards as a teaching aid and consist of photographic plates of international artworks and architectural examples.

We have identified people depicted in these photographs where possible. Please get in touch if you spot any inconsistencies, omissions or errors, and we will edit descriptions accordingly.

GSA Fashion Show film

The exact date and location of the 1982 fashion show are unknown.  Other shows held around this time were however held in the spring, and in the Assembly building or in the Assembly Hall of the Bourdon Building. The film comprises footage of students modelling on the stage. There is a mixture of men’s and women’s garments.  Styles and themes of garments include rainbow, futuristic, Oriental, Egyptian, ballgowns, stripes, geometry, hats, formal, off-the-shoulder, utility wear, white, accessories, metallic, fantasy, swimwear. The show also features an extravagant period ballgown, designed by Kenny McLellan, which was subsequently shown at the “Young Blood” exhibition at the Barbican Centre in London, in November 1983 to January 1984. The set for the show consisted of a pale, self-coloured fabric backdrop. The soundtrack for this film was added during the editing phase of the film and contains music which was played at the fashion show. The Magazine

There are 4 known surviving volumes: The Magazine 1893, The Magazine April 1894, The Magazine November 1894, The Magazine 1896.

The Magazine was a publication of original writings and designs by students from the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland, and their friends. Appearing in 4 volumes between November 1893 and Spring 1896, The Magazine contains text from contributors handwritten by Lucy Raeburn, editor, accompanied by original illustrations. These volumes are the only known copies of The Magazine. In addition to rare, early watercolours and designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the volumes contain early designs by Frances MacDonald and Margaret MacDonald, at a stage in their development which has been labelled 'Spook School', and two sets of photographs by James Craig Annan, when he was beginning to establish a reputation at home and abroad. Among other contributors were Janet Aitken, Katherine Cameron, Agnes Raeburn and Jessie Keppie, all of whom enjoyed lengthy careers in art and design.

The Magazine is similar to an album amicorum such as those which originated in the middle of the 16th century among German university students, who collected autographs of their friends and notable persons, sometimes adding coats of arms and illustrations. The Magazine resembled the album amicorum in that contributions were by a close group of students and their friends and is all the more interesting because the illustrations were produced by young people who had a common social background, were trained at the same school, and subjected to the same artistic influences. The contributors were closely linked, some by family, some by romantic attachments and had close social connections. A school for the "mentally handicapped": Initial studies

A free hand architectural sketch on tracing paper using Rotring black ink pen and coloured markers related to the initial study of the school project, illustrating:

  • the zoning concept showing the connection between series of events (learning spaces, home bases) linked with the commercial spaces and special events,
  • corridor concept emphasis on spaces not on corridor,
  • spaces for events located in different arrangements according to the central circulation route,
  • street concept developed to create most open arrangement,
  • perspective effects caused by different shapes of the corridor ceiling and how they could make the "mentally handicapped" children even more frightening,
  • sectional possibilities relating to the tenements on the opposite side of the street,
  • the idea of designing a building as a street to "give practice in coping with external environment, only inside".

The Third Eye Centre: Large rolled sheet

Architectural drawings on a large rolled greaseproof sheet to study the design of The Third Eye Centre in Glasgow as a side project which is directed by the tutor of the third full-time year course. This large rolled sheet consists of the architectural drawing of the building's ground floor plan in scale 1:100 showing its main functional spaces. It also consists of an enlarged part of the ground floor taken from the front side of the building with its upper floor plan, both in scale 1:50. This sheet also includes a sectional perspective in scale 1:20 taken from cash desk booking focal point looking towards its both sides to upstairs floor. This drawing consists of several human figures with humourous comments to give a sense of the real life of this social space. The rolled sheet also includes a coloured drawing of the front façade in scale 1:20, where the architect coloured this drawing from the back of the sheet.

A school for the "mentally handicapped": South elevation, North elevation, and Long section

Architectural drawing on tracing paper using Rotring black ink pen representing the final design of the south elevation and the north elevation in scale 1:100. The architect used a technique to render this elevation, mainly walls with horizonal lines leaving the window glasses as plain transparent areas. He also used Zip-A-Tone for window shadings. The same technique has been used to make the trees transparent figures to show the architectural elements behind them. The design of both elevation is based on the idea of solid and transparent between ground floor and upper floor giving the sense of lifting the upper floor by the cylinder columns, while the central glass dome appears to be the focal point.
The long section (scale 1:100) shows the structural system and constructional elements supporting the different indoor spaces and the variety of shapes relating to the functions of those spaces. The architect used figures to show the scale of the school building in relationship to people.
