This poster advertised a seminar on Charles Rennie Mackintosh which was arranged to mark the 10th anniversary of the Charles Rennie Mackintosh Society. GSA Archives and Collections hold 216 audiovisual files, covering a range of topics and a wide date range. The audiovisual material has been created both by GSA and by external organisations, such as the BBC (television and radio), STV and ITV, other educational institutions and the Scottish Arts Council. Media in the collection include 16mm films, 35mm films, audio cassettes, audio CDs, CD Rom, DV cassette, DVD, Floppy disk, Reel to reel audios, Super 8 film, U-matic films, VHS tapes and Video 8 tapes. The audiovisual files pertain to topics including the GSA Fashion and Degree Shows, and Activities Week; students discussing their work; lectures by architects; presentations by, and interviews and conversations with, GSA alumni; centenary of the Mackintosh Building; Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh; plays; and documentaries on GSA. Please note that this material is not yet fully catalogued and therefore some items may not be accessible to researchers. As at August 2017, only the fashion show audiovisual material has been catalogued. The remaining uncatalogued material is therefore not currently accessible for researchers.

Poster for a lecture by Brian Griffiths

This poster advertised a lecture by economist Brian Griffiths which was held in the Mackintosh Lecture Theatre at The Glasgow School Of Art in December 1972. At this time, Griffiths worked as lecturer at the London School of Economics and Political Science, however he would later become advisor to Baroness Thatcher during her time as Prime Minister. He then became the Vice Chairman of Goldman Sachs. This lecture focused on the topic of Christianity, capitalism and revolution and was organised by David Dobson who was head of the Sculpture department at The Glasgow School Of Art in 1972.

Poster for a lecture by Ian Breakwell entitled 'Continuous Diary'

This poster advertised a lecture given by the artist Ian Breakwell that was held in the Mackintosh Lecture Theatre at The Glasgow School Of Art. Breakwell is well known for working in a variety of mediums including print, installation, film and photography, however he is best known for making work based around his diary entries. He is also associated with The Artist Placement Group, an organisation set up in 1966 to bring art practice into hospitals and prisons. This particular lecture focused on work made between 1965 and 1967. The reverse of the poster is annotated with "J.Cosgrove".

The Glasgow School of Art photographic collection consists of

  • images taken by GSA to record the activities of the School
  • images taken for publicity purposes
  • images donated by former staff and students illustrating their time at the School
  • and images used as teaching aids at GSA.

Some of this material is currently uncatalogued and therefore not accessible for researchers.

The photographic collections consist of loose photographs, bound albums of photographs and a large collection of lantern slides and glass plate negatives.

The photographs record events at The Glasgow School of Art, its students and their work and act as an important historical source. A large part of the collection consists of the plate glass negatives which were used from the 19th century onwards as a teaching aid and consist of photographic plates of international artworks and architectural examples.

We have identified people depicted in these photographs where possible. Please get in touch if you spot any inconsistencies, omissions or errors, and we will edit descriptions accordingly.

Poster for Activities Week

This poster was used to advertise The Glasgow School Of Art's annual activities week. A number of events were organised including: films, lectures, poetry, jazz folk, drama, contests, disco, a bar in the Haldane building, dance art, a drag talent show and a snooker competition. Activities week ran annually from the 1970s until the mid 1980s. During this week, classes stopped and various events were organised instead. The poster is annotated on the reverse with "J.Cosgrove".

This poster was used to advertise a lecture by the artist Richard Smith, who is known for his abstract colour paintings and sculptural works dealing with materials in reference to popular culture. The lecture was held in the Haldane Building at The Glasgow School Of Art as part of the school's annual activities week in the early 1970s. The poster was designed and printed by Jimmy Cosgrove who worked as the head of textiles at The Glasgow School Of Art from 1973 to 1982.

Includes catalogues, programmes, flyers and tickets for Glasgow School of Art exhibitions, pageants, lectures and theatrical events as well as posters from Activities Week events and student fashion shows, dating from 1890 to the present. Ephemera also includes a collection of postcards from c1900 to the present, as well as material relating to: Glasgow School of Art's involvement with the international exhibition scene; records of the Woman's Work Exhibition, London, 1900; records of the Glasgow School of Art participation in the Glasgow International Exhibition, 1901; the Exhibition of Modern Furniture, Budapest, 1902; the Brussels Exhibition, 1910; and papers documenting the organisation of the Scottish Pavilion at the Exhibition of Decorative Arts, Turin, 1902. Some of the material is in French and Italian.
