Archival history
The Haldane Trust was established in 1843 by the will of James Haldane, an engraver of Glasgow. Its aim was to establish one or more scholarships of not less than GBP50 each per annum. The scholarships were open to students attending the Glasgow School of Art or any other school of art or design in Glasgow. Holders had to pursue a course of professional study in the Fine Arts, at home or abroad, approved by the Glasgow School of Art. The original scheme was altered more than once and the final scheme was approved under the Educational Endowments (Scotland) Acts 1928 to 1935 on 30 April 1935.
