This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 15th June 2018.

Original: Created at some time between 130 and 100 BC, to revive pre-hellenistic ideas. It is believed to depict Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans) the Greek goddess of love and beauty. Original excavated in 1820 on the Island of Melos. Original currently in the collection of the Louvre, Paris, France.

Custodial history

Two of three are listed in 1964/5 inventory as located in the entrance halls passage ways of the Mackintosh Building (GSAA/GOV/7/5). Cast is listed for sale in 'Catalogue Casts for Schools' (GSAA/ISE/5/8), however no evidence this was the distributer (D. Brucciani & Co.) or issue it was bought from.
