Biographical history

Printmaker, painter and teacher born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. He studied at the School of Art there, 1947-9, and Royal College of Art 1951-4. Was one of Jack Beddington's Young Artists of Promise, in the 1957 volume of that title. From 1954 was lecturer at Glasgow School of Art, becoming senior lecturer in 1970. As head of department he influenced many printmakers. Elected RE, RSW and RSA in 1976. Reeves had a one-man show at Douglas and Foulis Gallery in 1962. In 1980 there was a print retrospective tour organised by Peacock Printmakers at Aberdeen Art Gallery; Edinburgh, and in 1997 Glasgow Print Studio ran a retrospective of monoprints and etchings, 1972-97. Collaborative retrospectives took place at Talbot Rice Gallery, Edinburgh and Hunterian Art Gallery, Glasgow 2001; one for 1954-2001, Fine Art Society, 2002; and one at Bankside Gallery of Modern Art and other Scottish galleries. Reeves was a founder-member of the Edinburgh Printmaking Workshop and of the Print Studio in Glasgow.
