Wall clock for Glasgow School of Art

One of a series of electric slave clocks located through the Glasgow School of Art and run from a central 'master' clock. Installed in the new Mackintosh Furniture Gallery following restoration in 2013. This item was assessed for conversation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access project (2006-2010), and then again in 2018 following the fire in the Mackintosh Building in June 2018.

Poster for a Charles Rennie Mackintosh exhibition in Norway entitled '20 chairs - 100 years'

This poster features white images of twenty chairs with grey text to advertise an exhibition held in Jugendstilsenteret, Ålesund, Norway, from 6th June to the 12th Oct 2003. The exhibition of twenty Mackintosh chairs from the Glasgow School of Art's collection formed part of the opening celebrations at Norway’s newest cultural attraction, the Jugenstilsenteret (Art Nouveau Centre), in Ålesund. Similar to Glasgow, this city is one of the founding partners of the EU-funded Réseau Art Nouveau Network. The School’s contribution was hoped to inspire further cultural and artistic ties between the two countries.

Umbrella Stand for Ingram Street Tea Rooms

This item was damaged in the Mackintosh Building fire in May 2014. Conservation was completed in 2020. Designed for the Ingram Street Tea Rooms, Glasgow. The Ingram Street Tea Rooms were purchased by Glasgow Corporation in 1951 for £25,000 and were then rented out as various shops and warehouses.

High-back chair for Mains Street

Designed for 120 Main Street, Glasgow. An armchair version of F14 possibly one of a pair made for Mackintosh's Mains Street flat. In the 1899 Art & Craft exhibition Mackintosh showed an armchair with 'lacquer panel by Miss Margaret Mackintosh'. The only chair which fits this description is the one in Copenhagen which was bought by Koloman Moser at the Vienna Secession exhibition in 1900. The GSA chair is identical but lacking the lacquer plaque. It was possibly made later c1901 as a replacement for that bought by Moser. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

Bench for Windyhill

Designed for the schoolroom at Windyhill, Kilmacolm. A smaller, but otherwise identical version of the hall bench MC/F/30. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

Armchair for Glasgow School of Art

Designed for original board room at Glasgow School of Art. The chairs were designed for the original Board Room in the East wing (now the Mackintosh Room). The Governors never used this room for meetings and it was initially used as a studio while space was short in the half-finished building. When the new Board Room was built in the second phase of the building, Mackintosh designed a more elaborate version of this chair for it, MC/F/61. Six chairs reupholstered in brown horsehair 1985, very similar to the original fabric found on one of the chairs. Two remaining chairs reupholstered in 1986. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

Sample cabinet for William Douglas

Trade cabinet designed to hold various wood samples. Made for William Douglas, a decorator and friend of Mackintosh who worked on several of his commissions, especially Hous'hill. Reputedly designed by Mackintosh but some of the detailing suggests he did not closely supervise the execution. Each drawer holds samples of different woods, stains, paints and finishes. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

Schoolroom table for Gladsmuir

This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).
Designed for Gladsmuir, Kilmacolm. Two tables and two benches were made for the schoolroom at Gladsmuir, probably at the same time as the bookcase. The thistle motif pierced in the sides of the legs of the benches is repeated in the leaded glass of the bookcase.

Domino table for the Chinese Room, Ingram Street Tea Rooms

This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).
Designed for the Blue or Chinese Room at the Ingram Street Tea Rooms, Glasgow. The fretted back and side rails match the Chinese style motifs of the Blue Room (as called in the job books). Much of the woodwork in the Chinese Room was painted bright blue or red, but there is no trace of any finish having been applied to these chairs other than the ebonising which most of them still display. These chairs have always been associated with the Chinese Room and so must be identified with the entry for thirty-six in the job books (Roger Billcliffe). All the chairs rwere eupholstered in blue horsehair in 1985. The Ingram Street Tea Rooms were purchased by Glasgow Corporation in 1951 for £25,000 and were then rented out as various shops and warehouses.

Bookcase for Windyhill

Designed for the drawing room at Windyhill, Kilmacolm. Originally designed, on simpler lines, as a toy chest for the playroom, then amended and elaborated as a bookcase for the drawing room. A very large piece of furniture placed against the west wall of the room.
This item was assessed for conversation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access project (2006-2010), and then again in 2018 following the fire in the Mackintosh Building in June 2018.

Dresser for Glasgow School of Art

This item was partially lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).
The upper (shelved) section and 2 lower drawer units remain. Designed for Ladies Common Room at Glasgow School of Art. Mackintosh's version of a traditional dresser/bookcase, making extensive use of the scalloped edging used at the Oak Room in 1907 and at the Glasgow School of Art Library 1907. (Roger Billcliffe).

The Magazine

There are 4 known surviving volumes: The Magazine 1893, The Magazine April 1894, The Magazine November 1894, The Magazine 1896.

The Magazine was a publication of original writings and designs by students from the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland, and their friends. Appearing in 4 volumes between November 1893 and Spring 1896, The Magazine contains text from contributors handwritten by Lucy Raeburn, editor, accompanied by original illustrations. These volumes are the only known copies of The Magazine. In addition to rare, early watercolours and designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the volumes contain early designs by Frances MacDonald and Margaret MacDonald, at a stage in their development which has been labelled 'Spook School', and two sets of photographs by James Craig Annan, when he was beginning to establish a reputation at home and abroad. Among other contributors were Janet Aitken, Katherine Cameron, Agnes Raeburn and Jessie Keppie, all of whom enjoyed lengthy careers in art and design.

The Magazine is similar to an album amicorum such as those which originated in the middle of the 16th century among German university students, who collected autographs of their friends and notable persons, sometimes adding coats of arms and illustrations. The Magazine resembled the album amicorum in that contributions were by a close group of students and their friends and is all the more interesting because the illustrations were produced by young people who had a common social background, were trained at the same school, and subjected to the same artistic influences. The contributors were closely linked, some by family, some by romantic attachments and had close social connections.
