Almost all works are by former students and staff or figures related to the history of The Glasgow School of Art. The earliest pieces date from the 16th century and later examples have been purchased from recent Degree Shows. The work is in a variety of media and includes drawings, paintings, prints, sketchbooks, furniture and sculpture. Artists represented include many key figures and the most influential and successful students.

There are also several works from former tutors including Neil Dallas Brown, David Donaldson and Fred Selby, alongside contemporary works by students, donated or purchased at degree show. Key works include those by: Maurice Greiffenhagen, Francis Newbery, John Quinton Pringle, Benno Schotz, Ian Fleming and James D Robertson. Suites of note include large collections of Joan Eardley sketches and paintings, Joan Palmer prints, and architectural drawings by Eugene Bourdon.

Large red vase

Large red glazed ceramic vase with red marking on bottom "GSA 581". Due to information in a 1958 inventory, vase can be dated pre-1958. It may be a student piece or could have been bought and used as a teaching aid.

Brass lantern

Brass lantern treated with gold finish with cut-out ornamental design on top and bottom. Has glass covering for light, cut wires on bottom which would have been attached to light bulb inside. Lantern would have been attached to the wall. Back of lantern has red marking, "SCH-302". Indented stamp on top front of lamp, "ALLAN & CO". Due to information in an inventory, lantern can be dated pre-1958.

Ship block printing display case

Wooden display case showing process of wood and linoleum block printing, featuring ship design. Loose paper GSA label once attached to back of case with writing "Design. B-Block Printing". Due to information in archival documentation, display case can be dated pre-1943. This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014 and was conserved in 2018.

Japanese inspired dark wood gavel and block with engraved silver coloured metal commemorative plaque reading, "Presented to the Glasgow School of Art by the City of Glasgow on the occasion of their 150th anniversary, 28 June 1995."

Fish cape sleeved jacket

Cape sleeved jacket with long, mermaid style fishtail made of an iridescent synthetic fabric lined with green synthetic silk and decorated with strands of couched wool in a fish scale design.  Thought to have been made and used as a costume for a masque or play at The Glasgow School of Art in the early-mid 20th century.

Blue rabbit with stand

Blue glazed ceramic rabbit with black glazed eyes with red marking on bottom of rabbit, "SCH-83". Includes wooden stand painted black with four small feet, shaped for rabbit to sit. Bottom of stand has red marking "SCH-83B". Due to information in an inventory, rabbit can be dated pre-1958.

Modern long case 'master' electric clock, c1960s. Formerly in the Janitors Office, it was used to run the Mackintosh 'slave' clocks throughout the building. Heavy pendulum stored separately.

Sandstone plaque - The Glasgow School of Art Common Room

Sandstone name plaque for the GSA Common Room, which was part of the building on the opposite side of Renfrew Street aquired ca. 1920 to allow the School to expand.  This building housed the Assembly Hall which was opened in 1929, so other facillities are assumed to date from around the same time. (Plaque was formerly wrongly identified as that for the Assembly Hall).

Sphagnum moss sign

Cast metal (probably bronze) commemorative plaque from the Mackintosh building with raised lettering reading, 'To record the use of this building as a sphagnum moss depot. during the Great War and the thanks of the Scottish Branch British Red Cross Society to the generous donors. April 1919.'

Electric clock

A round and commercially available brass clock installed into the Board Room of the Mackintosh Building and linked to the electrical circuit of Mackintosh studio clocks introduced in 1909/10. The brass clock can be seen illustrated in the background of Francis Newbery's painting of the GSA Building Committee meeting in the Board Room which dates from 1909-1914.

Collection of cast reliefs

Collection of brown stained round plaster cast reliefs. Mostly depicting portrait busts. Kept in eight shallow wooden drawers. Themes include: religious figures, military figures, ancient Greek and Roman figures, royalty, various historical figures, and commemorative scenes. Some include stamped titles on front, some scratched on back, some without any identification. Also includes paper timeline of ancient Roman rulers.
