Small wooden stool in arts and crafts style, with cut out motif in the style of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. At one time there were many examples in use within The Glasgow School of Art, but very few remain.
This collection includes works by a number of artists, designers and architects associated with Charles Rennie Mackintosh, including his wife Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, his sister-in-law Frances Macdonald MacNair and his sister-in-law's husband Herbert MacNair. These works include textiles, designs, and four volumes of a Glasgow School of Art student publication called The Magazine, as well as several individual watercolours now separated from the publication. The collection also includes a number of models for proposed architectural schemes by Mackintosh.

The exact meaning of the symbolism of this work, and its companion, 'The Tree of Influence' has eluded all commentators on Mackintosh's early water-colours. The obvious source of the symbolism is nature, and Mackintosh here reaches his most extreme distortion of organic forms.' (Roger Billcliffe).

Trade cabinet designed to hold various wood samples. Made for William Douglas, a decorator and friend of Mackintosh who worked on several of his commissions, especially Hous'hill. Reputedly designed by Mackintosh but some of the detailing suggests he did not closely supervise the execution. Each drawer holds samples of different woods, stains, paints and finishes. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

In the early days of the School the staff did not have individual rooms but shared common rooms one for men and one for women. The desk provides writing space for three people in one piece of furniture. The construction and appearance are simple and bold, as are the other pieces of the period not intended for public display. This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. Designed as individual lights within the Library at Glasgow School of Art. Very similar in design to the thirteen lampshades which make up the central light fitting in the Library.
The original position of the fifth lamp is not known. In 1985 it was cleaned and placed above the School outer front doors, at the same time as these were repainted white.

The central array was made up of 12 small canisters attached to the light frame on the ceiling, with eight medium pendants and five large pendants hanging below. There were an additional twelve medium canisters attached to the coffered ceiling both above and below the library balcony, making 24. Originally there were also four additional medium hanging pendants in each of the south and western window bays, though these four lights, and the medium canister in the librarians office, had all been removed before the fire in 2014, meaning there were 48 in the library. The library was destroyed by the fire, though many metal fragments from the lights were salvaged.
