Audiovisual material

GSA Archives and Collections hold 216 audiovisual files, covering a range of topics and a wide date range. The audiovisual material has been created both by GSA and by external organisations, such as the BBC (television and radio), STV and ITV, other educational institutions and the Scottish Arts Council. Media in the collection include 16mm films, 35mm films, audio cassettes, audio CDs, CD Rom, DV cassette, DVD, Floppy disk, Reel to reel audios, Super 8 film, U-matic films, VHS tapes and Video 8 tapes. The audiovisual files pertain to topics including the GSA Fashion and Degree Shows, and Activities Week; students discussing their work; lectures by architects; presentations by, and interviews and conversations with, GSA alumni; centenary of the Mackintosh Building; Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh; plays; and documentaries on GSA. Please note that this material is not yet fully catalogued and therefore some items may not be accessible to researchers. As at August 2017, only the fashion show audiovisual material has been catalogued. The remaining uncatalogued material is therefore not currently accessible for researchers.

Drawings

These folders contain drawings produced by Harry Anthony Wheeler when he travelled to Italy after being awarded the John Keppie Scholarship in 1948. The John Keppie Scholarship gave a bursary of £100 to one architecture student per year to fund a study trip of their choice. The focus of Wheeler's project was Loggias in Florence, Rome and Venice. Included are 5 "plottings" of the Loggia La Badia near Florence, Wheeler's original portfolio case and 48 loose plates of drawings and photographs which are listed below: Plate 1: Drawing of the courtyard, cortile, open staircase, gateway and loggia of The Bargello Palazzo Del Podesta in Florence. Stephano and two of the Cloister S.Carmine in Venice. Plate 45: Five photographs of the Pescheria in Venice. The photographs feature the detail of the Capital Fish's Head Moteif on top of a column, timber brackets, Ca' d'Oro seen from the market, the top Loggia looking over the Grand Canal and some Arcading. Wheeler has commented that the Arcading is Modern Gothic and features textured brickwork. Plate 46: Five small mounted photographs. The photographs feature the sotto portico (meaning under the porch) of the Scuola Giorgo degli Schiavoni with one photograph featuring Wheeler's comments on the alternating column shapes, a Loggia near Ponte Lungo, a colonnade near San Francesca della Vigna and the Cloisters of the Monestry adjoining San Maria Maggiore in Venice. Plate 47: Four small mounted photographs. The photographs feature; A portico with a balcony Loggia above with Wheeler's comments that it is Venetian Gothic, a potico with an arcade above with Wheeler's comments that it is Venetian Byzantine, a Loggia of Modern Building with Wheeler's comments that it is Gothic style and some modelled timber brackets above columns.

  • DIR/5/38/6/3: Order of Proceedings for the inauguration of the Sign of Saint Edward, King and Martyr, Patron Saint of the Village, at Corfe Castle. Newbery made many of the readings at the event, 02 Jul 1927 (1 item).

  • DIR/5/38/6/4: Cardboard silhouette of Francis and Jessie Newbery in a photograph mount, c1930s (1 item).

  • DIR/5/38/6/5: Letters and fragments of letters from Jessie Newbery to her daughter Elsie and perhaps Mary. One of the letters to Elsie is dated 24 Sep 1934. The other letters are fragmentary and include topics such as recipes, books and sewing projects, c1934. (4 sheets)

  • DIR/5/38/6/6: Letter from George M Baltus to Mr and Mrs Newbery catching up with them following the Second World War, telling them of his experiences during that time, and telling them family news, 07 Jan 1946 (1 sheet).

Poster for the Master of Design degree show

This poster advertised the work of graduating students from the Master of Design course which was part of The Glasgow School Of Art graduate degree show in 1983. The exhibition was held in the Mackintosh Building on The Glasgow School Of Art campus from the 10th to the 16th of December. The style of this poster is similar to that of a poster for the Master of Design fashion show which was designed by illustrator Ingeborg Smith and can be found under the reference number GSA/EPH/10/13.

GSA Fashion Show film

The 1985 Fashion Show was held in the Assembly Building from 11th to 16th March 1985. The film comprises footage of students modelling on the stage. There is a mixture of men’s and women’s garments.  Styles and themes of garments include African, Oriental, Egyptian, hats, bright colours, white, geometry, metallic, sleeves, fruit, accessories, Greek, graphics. Students involved in the show came from a variety of subject areas and years, including: Embroidery and Weaving; Fine Art; Sculpture; and Printed Textiles. All the textiles students modelling designed garments for the show. The set for the show consisted of a black background with white symbols. The soundtrack for this film was added during the editing phase of the film and contains music which was played at the fashion show. Minutes

Minutes of the Committee of Management, 1854-1892, and of the Board of Governors, 1892-2002. The minute books also contain minutes and some correspondence of a large number of committees of the Board of Governors including: the Chairman’s Committee; Finance Committee; Staff and School Committee (Human Resources Committee); Estates Committee; Audit Committee; Business Committee and a number of sub committees that change from year to year. Appendices: The minute books also contain appendices or supporting documents and papers including correspondence, reports, financial statements and press clippings. Until 1995 appendices tend to be stored pasted or interleaved within the minutes however from 1995-2002 surviving appendices have been collected and stored in a separate folder(s), labelled accordingly.

From 2003 onwards Board of Governors meeting papers, or appendices, are stored within the minute books. Minutes of Board of Governors meetings from 2003 onwards will be found amongst the papers of the next Board meeting, during which they were approved e.g. Minutes for the Board meeting of 03 Dec 2002 and found within the papers for the meeting of 06 Feb 2003.

Annual Reports and Accounts, Strategic plans, Press Clippings, and Annual Reports to Senate have been removed from the meeting papers of 2003-2014. Annual Reports and Accounts can be found at GSAA/GOV/1; Strategic plans at GSAA/GOV/8/1; Press Clippings at GSAA/NEW; and Annual Reports to Senate at GSAA/AC.

Format: From 1845-March 1909 minutes are handwritten in bound volumes. From May 1909-Jun 1955 minutes are typed in bound volumes (with the exception of GOV/2/16 which is loose). Thereafter minutes are typed and loose in folders.

The minutes up to 2002 have separate index books, and many are indexed by committee and/or subjects. From Oct 2014 Board of Governors minutes and papers are stored digitally as PDF files.

Data protection and sensitivity: Minutes over 30 years old are available for public consultation. Permission from the Board of Governors is needed for access to those which are less than 30 years old. However, minutes from 2012 onwards are published online at: http://www.gsa.ac.uk/about-gsa/key-information/governance/board-agendas,-papers-and-minutes/ please note, these may be redacted. Records containing sensitive information about individuals have been collected into separate folders that will be closed for 75 years, in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.
