Archival history
The Cargill Hostel at Culzean Castle (sometimes referred to as ‘Culzean Hostel’) was an artistic retreat for students of the Glasgow School of Art proposed in 1966 and, with agreement from the National Trust of Scotland who have responsibility for the property, was approved by the Scottish Education Department in the same year.
The DWT Cargill Trust donated £4,000 for the renovation and conversion of the Hostel building at Culzean Castle and the renovations were completed with help from the Scottish Education Department. The Hostel bore the name of Cargill in recognition of the Trust’s generosity.
The Hostel was established under the Directorship of Harry Barnes and he was elected to sit on the Council for the National Trust for Scotland in 1967. The Cargill Hostel was opened at a ceremony on 30 Sep 1967. Students from across the Glasgow School of Art’s departments and disciplines were taken by members of School staff, in groups, to the Hostel throughout the academic session for a week at a time as an integral part of their training.
In a copy of the Scottish Design Centre Monthly Newsletter, Nov 1967, Barnes described the motivation for establishing a Hostel in Culzean. His vision was to allow Glasgow’s students to study the natural form as: “Glasgow School of Art is, of course, in an urban area, and this has caused a problem, in that some return to natural form is necessary in the training of our students. At Culzean there are remarkable opportunities for landscape painting and botanical drawing provided by the gardens, the sea, the cliffs, and the shore with its fascinating variety of minerals….at Culzean we have an immense reservoir of ideas…”(source reference: DIR/13/12/2/4).
In the summer months, Glasgow School of Art staff were able to rent out the Hostel as vacation accommodation.
The lease for the Hostel building with the National Trust for Scotland was terminated in 1989 and after 21 years, the Cargill Hostel and Culzean Castle ceased to operate.
