History
Hugh Cameron Wilson was born in Springburn, Glasgow, on the 22nd of December 1885, one of six children of Mary Wilson (née Cameron) and Robert Wilson, an engine fitter and journeyman. Wilson attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1907 to 1914 as a student of drawing and painting and life drawing, working as an art teacher from semester 1911 to 1912 and becoming an art master student from 1913 to 1914. During the First World War, Wilson served as a private in the Cameron Highlanders as well as in the Royal Engineers. He was awarded the Military Medal with Bar. After the war, Wilson married Elizabeth Lamb, a school teacher, in Glasgow in 1935. Wilson was an oil painter of landscapes and portraits. He studied under Frances Newbery at GSA and exhibited at numerous locations including the Royal Scottish Academy and the Glasgow Institute between 1920 and 1952. A Hugh Cameron Wilson is recorded to have died in Dumbarton in 1967, aged 81, a possible match though his birth and death years are noted as 1885 to 1852 on the BBC website. Wilson is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
