History
Robert Robson was born in 1902 and attended The Glasgow School of Art between 1917 and 1921. During this time Robson resided at 15 Netherfield Street, to the east of Glasgow city centre. Given his young age at the time of attendance, this may have been his family home.
Robson was enrolled at The School as a selected student from the 'Continuation Classes,' a foundation programme offered in affiliation with several high schools around Glasgow and possibly similar to a portfolio course today. Robson studied as an evening student of Drawing and Painting throughout his four years at The School and was taught by Mr James W. Ferguson, the assistant professor of the Drawing and Painting department at that time. Robson's occupation is recorded as 'apprentice brass engraver,' which may be why he chose to pursue his studies by evening. In 1917, shells and other munitions relating to the war effort were often engraved, as were nautical instruments for use in the Glasgow shipbuilding industry.
Whether Robson chose to pursue his artistic ambitions after his time at The Glasgow School of Art is unknown.
