History
William Ernest Robinson was born in 1893 and attended The Glasgow School of Art for the academic year 1916-1917 and again from 1918-1919. Robinson's home address is recorded as 31 Alpha Road in Cambridge, which may have been his family home. During his first year as a student, he resided at 328 Woodlands Road, west of Glasgow city centre, later moving to 76 Gladstone Street. The tuition for his first year was subsidised by the City Local Authority and the second year was met by Cambridge Local Authority.
Robinson's occupation is recorded as 'scientific instrument maker.' Glasgow was at the global forefront of ship-building at this time, so it is likely that Robinson's profession involved the manufacturing of items such as compass adjusters, binnacle construction and other nautical instruments. Whyte, Thomson and Co Ltd, were the principle nautical instrument manufacturers at this time, with an establishment based in Broomielaw, a short walk from Robinson's place of residence.
Robinson studied Drawing and Painting during his time at The Glasgow School of Art, first as an evening student and later, as a day student. He was situated in Room 30, suggesting he was enrolled on the Anatomy and Modelling programmes. It is likely that during his time he was under the tutelage of Professors James M Dunlop and James Gray.
Whether Robinson continued with his artistic ambitions is unknown. There is record of a William Robinson exhibiting a painting named 'The Headland' with The Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts in 1955, but we cannot be certain that it is in fact William Ernest Robinson.
