History

Ella Alexander Reid (born 1889) had a prolific academic career at The Glasgow School of Art. She commenced her studies in the academic year 1908 and completed her time as a student in 1919. Throughout this entire period Reid resided at 200 St. George's Road, west of Glasgow city centre. Her studies were in part subsidised by the City Local Authority. Reid initially began her studies on a Saturday basis, although the majority of her time at the School was spent as a day student.

During her first year at the School, Reid is recorded as having studied Design, however she changed to Drawing and Painting in her second year and continued to study in this department until the end of her time at The Glasgow School of Art. Notably, Reid is recorded as having studied Costume from 1917-1918. This may have fallen under the programme 'Book Illustration; Processes History of Costume and Armour' which was taught by Professor Allan D. Mainds. Reid was also taught by a Mr Alexander Musgrove, who taught Drawing and Painting around the period 1909-1912. Please get in touch if you have further information.
