Reid, Charles F

Charles Findlater Reid was born on 26 May 1896, the son of Charles Reid, photographer, and his wife Jeannie Thomson Fraser. He was articled to H E Clifford & Lunan of Glasgow in 1913, studying part time at Glasgow School of Architecture from 1913 to 1915. His apprenticeship was interrupted by war service as Corporal with the Motor Gun Corps and the Motor Machine Gun Service Royal Artillery but he was discharged from the army on 18 October 1919, allowing him to return to continue his training with the same firm. He remained as an assistant after his apprenticeship, and continued to work for Clifford after the dissolution of the partnership with Lunan due to the latter's health problems in 1923, but was obliged to move on at the end of March 1925 when Clifford himself retired. Reid then secured a position in the office of Watson, Salmond & Gray, leaving that office in January 1929 and two months later joining James Taylor Thomson as an assistant. He was admitted ARIBA in that year. He moved again on 1 June 1930, becoming chief assistant to William Beresford Inglis, and was admitted LRIBA early the following year, his proposers being John Watson, Thomas Harold Hughes and David Bateman Hutton. Reid died aged 65 at the County Hospital, Cleland, on 1 April 1962. He was survived by his wife Elizabeth Young.
