History

Catherine Rankin was born in 1891. She was a student at The Glasgow School of Art from 1916 to 1917 and again from 1918 to 1919. During her time at the School, Rankin resided at Willowbank Street in Glasgow's West End. She undertook her studies by evening. Furthermore her occupation at the time is recorded as a teacher, so we may speculate that she was working in this role during the day.

For the academic year 1916 to 1917, Rankin studied Design under the tutelage of Miss Ann MacBeth, herself a renowned embroidery designer and draughtswoman who published several books on needlework. Rankin's areas of study likely involved Needlecraft and Embroidery and Pottery Design and Decoration.

Rankin returned to The Glasgow School of Art for another academic year in 1918, this time studying Drawing and Painting. As an evening student, she may have been under the tutelage of James M. Dunlop, the Anatomy instructor at that time. Please get in touch if you have further information.
