History
Albert James Rae was born in 1884 in Dunedin, New Zealand. He was a student at The Glasgow School of Art between 1914 and 1917 and also studied at The School of Art and Design, Dunedin, The London Polytechnic and The Slade School of Art.
Rae had a prolific academic career and worked across the mediums of photography, drawing, painting and printmaking, where he mastered the mezzopoint technique. During his time as a student at The Glasgow School of Art, he resided at Elmbank Street, Charing Cross, later moving to Glasgow's Oxford Street.
Rae's professional career involved a period in London, where he worked as a designer for the poster manufacturers Waterlow's. He also spent time as a drawing teacher at The Glasgow School of Art.
He finally returned to New Zealand in 1922, where he taught at the Timaru Boys High School until his retirement. He continued to paint landscapes into his retirement, one of which has been displayed at The Royal Academy London. He also exhibitied at Auckland and Canterbury Societies of Art, New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and Otago Art Society.
Rae married Alice Ruth Williamson in 1947 and died in Wellington aged 84. Examples of his prints may be seen on the Christchurch Art Gallery website.
