History
Henry George Christian Quast was born on January 5th 1880 in Anderston, Glasgow to Jessie Quast (née Ferguson) and Henry Christian Quast, a lithographic artist. In the 1871 census his father's place of birth is recorded as Copenhagen, Denmark, although the name Quast originates from Germany. His father died in 1895 of 'paralysis' and 'disease of the brain'. Quast attended evening classes in life drawing and drawing and painting at The Glasgow School of Art from 1898 to 1901, and again from 1905 to 1910. During this period his occupations are recorded variously as measurer, clerk, tabletwriter, salesman, and warehouseman. During the First World War he served in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders before being transferred to the Labour Corps, probably in the event of its establishment in 1917. In 1929, age 48, he emigrated to Quebec, Canada with his sister Minnie. His occupation is listed as 'sign writer'. He died in Nelson, British Columbia on 3rd September 1936, and is buried at Nelson Memorial Park. He never married. He is listed on The Glasgow School of Art's World War One Roll of Honour.
