Henry Gordon Prentice was born in Govanhill on the 29th May 1896, one of three children of Margaret (née Snow) and Henry S Prentice, a rail saloon car attendant/railway labourer. Sometimes Prentice is referred to as Gordon Prentice. Prentice attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1918 to 1919 as an evening student of drawing and painting. During the First World War, Prentice served in the 8th Highlanders battalion, in the Royal Field artillery regiment as a gunner. After the war, in 1918 he lists his occupation as an engineer and before the war in 1913 as a turner. He died on the 24th March 1923 of head injuries and compound fractures at home in Cathcart. Prentice is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
