Alexander Reid Prentice was born in Greenock in 1895, one of 4 children (siblings Charles Harris Curtis Prentice, Laurence Stuart Prentice and Aline Nora Prentice) of Ada Norrish (née Curtis) and Alexander Reid, a solicitor. Prentice attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1916 to 1917 as a day student of life drawing and china painting, while working as an artist. During the First World War, Prentice served in 10th Scottish Rifles as a temporary captain. He was killed on the 9th of November 1917 at the age of 22, and is buried in Faubourg-d'amiens. In 1918 his family travelled to Trinidad on the Crown of Cadiz and did not return to Scotland permanently until 1932. Prentice is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
