History
Roberta Brackenridge Paterson (born 28th July 1898) was a student at The Glasgow School of Art from 1917 until 1922. She attended drawing and painting classes alternating between day and evening sessions. In 1918-1919 her occupation is listed as a clerkess, and then a bookkeeper and during her final year, a black and white artist. She was a recipient of The Haldane Trust bursary in both the 1917-1918 and 1918-1919 years, worth £1/1 shilling. Roberta was based in Garnethill Street, Glasgow during her time with the School.
Records show that on 21st October 1907, herself and her sister Marguerite, were enrolled on the girls register for Tooting Graveney Boy's School in London by their father William Paterson, a rifle range proprictor and were residing in Nutwell Street, London at this time.
The 1901 census suggests Roberta and her family including her mother Jane Paterson, older brother and younger sister as well as her aforementioned father and sister were living in New City Road, Glasgow, along with 19 year old domestic servant Lucy Jackson.
It appears she travelled fairly extensively as the 1930 US Census and California passenger and crew list records suggest she was based in the United States at some point, and on 4th February 1931 she married Frank Southwell Weir, a Captain in H.M. Forces, in Shanghai. Born in Ireland on 18th December 1896, Frank had served in the Royal Garrison Artillery regiment during the First World War, firstly as a second lieutenant, then lieutenant and later Acting Major.
Roberta died aged 85 in St Ives, Cornwall on 16th May 1984.
