Gertrude Helen Paterson (born 28th July 1896) was a student at The Glasgow School of Art from 1915 until 1923. Whilst in her first year she attended day classes in drawing and painting, thereafter she was an evening student studying design. Additionally, she focused on metalwork during the 1916-1917 year and then lettering the following session. Gertrude was a recipient of The Haldane Trust Bursary for design and decorative art in the 1918-1919 and 1919-1920 years. In the 1916-1917 school year, she won the Roll of Honour commission for the Millport Y.F. Church, and was noted as working as a draughtswoman for the Clyde Valley Electrical Company in this same year. Following this, she also won the Bronze Medal for Design in 1917-1918.

She resided in Crosshouse, Millport and also Lochleven Road, Langside when first attending the School. Between 1917 and 1919 she is noted as staying at the Rodgers residence in Hill Street, Garnethill followed by Buccleuch Street in later years. She is described as both a ladysketcher and a draughtswoman.
