Biographical history

Devreese studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Coutrai in Flanders and under his father, the well-known sculptor Constant Devreese. In 1881 he went to Brussels to under Simonis and Charles van der Stappen. When 24 he gained the second Prix de Rome for his bas relief of The Death of Caesar. In 1889 he obtained a first prize in a competition for sculpture from life opened by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels and in the same year, the gold medal at the Exhibition of Cologne.
