Edward McKinlay was born in Campbeltown in 1895, one of three children of Margaret and Donald McKinlay, a Librarian. Edward attended The Glasgow School of Art as a part-time student of Architecture for one year in 1912. During the First World War, he served in the 9th battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, and was killed in action on the 15th of July 1916 in France and Flanders. Edward McKinlay is commemorated on the Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
