History
James Maclean was born in Anderston, Glasgow in 17th February 1879, one of 9 children of Grace Maclean (née McColl) and Alexander Maclean, a commercial traveller. Maclean attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1903 to 1907 as an evening student of life drawing, while working as an insurance clerk. During the First World War, Maclean served in the Highland Light Infantry regiment. After the war, he worked as an apprentice basket maker. He died in November 1921 of pneumonia. Maclean is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
