History
John Kench was born on 18 May 1894. As an apprentice stone carver, he attended evening classes in Modelling and Sculpture at The Glasgow School of Art from 1908 to 1914 and was the recipient of the Haldane Trust bursary for £2 from 1912-1913. During the First World War, John Kench served as a Private in the 13th London Regiment Battalion and attained the rank of Sergeant in the 7th (City of London) Battalion of the London Regiment Battalion. He was killed in action in Flanders, France, on 7 October 1916. John Kench is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
