William Reid Kelly was born in Carluke, Lanark on 4 Nov 1886, the child of Agnes Kelly (née Gibson) and James Kelly, a Teacher. He attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1904 to 1907, while he worked as a Bank Clerk. He is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour, which states that he served as 2nd Lieutenant in the King's Liverpool Regiment.
