James Carnegie Keir was born February 2nd, 1893, the only child of Cecilia and James Keir, family grocers. James attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1909 to 1919 as a full-time student in Drawing and Painting. His studies were interrupted from 1916 to 1918, when he served in the Highland Light Infantry during the First World War. James Carnegie Keir is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
