Almost all works are by former students and staff or figures related to the history of The Glasgow School of Art. The earliest pieces date from the 16th century and later examples have been purchased from recent Degree Shows. The work is in a variety of media and includes drawings, paintings, prints, sketchbooks, furniture and sculpture. Artists represented include many key figures and the most influential and successful students.

There are also several works from former tutors including Neil Dallas Brown, David Donaldson and Fred Selby, alongside contemporary works by students, donated or purchased at degree show. Key works include those by: Maurice Greiffenhagen, Francis Newbery, John Quinton Pringle, Benno Schotz, Ian Fleming and James D Robertson. Suites of note include large collections of Joan Eardley sketches and paintings, Joan Palmer prints, and architectural drawings by Eugene Bourdon.

Long multi-coloured banner. Wefts and warps in shades of purple, orange, pink, green, yellow, grey and brown form an abstract design of gradated colours on a cream-coloured background. The warps have been left long in the lower edge and turned into a fringe.

Double-faced fabric, in an even, regular weave. Grid design on a cream background in rectangles of red, orange, yellow and three shades of blue, with colour gradations in some parts of the design. It also has been quilted to add texture and weight to the lower half of the banner.

Blazer which was worn as part of a uniform by a student at The Glasgow School of Art.

Welted edged, one edge unhemmed, looped at top edge for hanging. Industrially dyed wool.

Classical scene; three figures. Awarded to David Broadfoot Carter. Inscribed obverse: "Glasgow School of Art, Bram Stoker Medal for the best imaginative work of the year/ D.Broadfoot Carter 1903".

Inscribed obverse: "Glasgow School of Art, Bram Stoker Medal for the best imaginative work of the year/ James Huck 1904".

Large brown pottery bottle vase with black leaf pattern. No obvious makers mark, but believed to be by John Calderwood who worked as a technician in the ceramics department of the Art School during the 1990s.

Large plain weave sample woven with fine cotton threads in dark blue, light blue, silver blue, coral, and dark green, and finer multi-coloured threads. With a pattern of vertical stripes and bands, some of them with a puckered effect.

"Block print velvet, probably from USA, date approx. 1904" on reverse. "780 5/8, 34" also stencilled on reverse.

Polychrome (blue, green) glazed fragment from the bottom of a ceramic vase with handpainted spotted animal, possibly a deer, surronded by a floral design. Label on verso - 'Sultanabad 14th C.' Sulatanabad is a city, now known as Arak, in Iran.

Hollow sarcophagus cast with relief pattern of animals and figures. Dark yellow glaze over exterior. White, unglazed interior. '14-103' handwritten in black on bottom right corner.

Polychrome (blue, green, yellow, white) glazed ceramic tile fragment with hand-painted floral and plant designs. 'Shah Isfahan' handwritten on verso. Label on verso - 'Shah - 17th mosque Isfahan.' The Shah Mosque (Persian), also known as Imam Mosque (Persian), is a mosque in Isfahan, Iran. It is regarded as one of the masterpieces of Irania/Persian architecture and an example of Islamic era architecture of Iran. It employed the haft rangi (seven-colour) style of tile mosaic.

Polychrome (blue, brown, gold) glazed ceramic tile fragment with what might be hand-painted or transfer printing design of a seated human figure. Border along the left side on recto could possibly be script. Left edge has a pointed, triangular shape. The fragment appears to have been broken into 3 parts and then was glued back together. Label on verso - 'Persia 13th C.'

Polychrome (blue, purple, brown) glazed ceramic tile fragment with hand-painted floral design. Relief of an animal, possibly a goat or ram, on top part. Relief of a plant or tree on bottom part. 'Sulatanabad' handwritten on verso. Sulatanabad is a city, now known as Arak, in Iran. Label on verso - 'Persia 13th C.'

Glazed, star-shaped ceramic tile with 8 points. Has what might be hand-painted or transfer printing of a brown, standing bird figure. Appears a label was on verso, however most of it has been removed. Some chipping is present, otherwise the ceramic tile is intact.

Polychrome (blue, purple, green) glazed ceramic tile fragment with hand-painted flowers and leaves. 'Damascus' handwrirtten in red on one edge. Damascus is the capital of Syria. Label on verso - 'Damascus'.

Modern long case 'master' electric clock, c1960s. Formerly in the Janitors Office, it was used to run the Mackintosh 'slave' clocks throughout the building. Heavy pendulum stored separately.

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. Carved wood, probably Victorian.

These images were received in digital format on 5 disks and 1 USB stick. Some but not all of the original photographs and items are held in the collection.

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.

Tapestry woven floral rug in acid colours featuring a flower-filled central medallion on a red and orange background with similar serpentine floral border. "8037 A7" stencilled on reverse.

Folder containing coloured woven and embroidered samples, range of layered samples showing scrim with pulled thread effects. Printed oval label on back of some samples with 'Dobby and No'. Several coloured layer of scrim in each sample. Printed black and white newscutting of a butterfly also contained in folder (x 9 pieces).

This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014 and was conserved in 2018-19. The digital images attached to this record are of stencils which were loose inside the front cover of the book, and not pages of the book itself.

Classical figure (obverse): Lion Rampant/Glasgow Coat of Arms (reverse). Awarded to D Ballantine. Inscribed obverse: "Glasgow Drawing Competition"; reverse: "Qui Meruit Ferrat Palmam".
