GSA Fashion Show film

The 1978 Fashion Show was held in the Mackintosh Lecture Theatre from the 24th to 28th April 1978. The film comprises a combination of still images and film footage of students preparing for the show behind the scenes, and modelling on the stage. There is a mixture of men’s and women’s garments. Styles and themes include metallic fabrics, sportswear, bodysuits and off-the-shoulder dresses. Children’s clothes were also modelled in the show although these are not shown in the film. Garments were designed and modelled mostly by students or former students. Indigo Designs also designed evening dresses for the show. Students involved in the show came from a variety of subject areas and years, including: 1st year; Embroidery and Weaving; Textiles; and Graphics. Hair was by the Hely Design Group and shoes were from Ravel. The set for the show consisted of a pale, self-coloured ruched fabric backdrop. A soundtrack was recorded separately to accompany the film but GSA does not hold a copy of this. A short clip of this film is available online at https://vimeo.com/channels/504825/222346017. Four sample weaves on card. One with sections with thick white wool weft. One ruched fabric caught with chevron stitches on blue and beige fabric. One with a geometric designed weave in peach, dark pink, teal, blue and gold. The final piece with open weave sections and bands of close woven tape in blue, grey and dark pink, with flat orange button decoration.

Four sample weaves on card. One in shades of blue with orange and peach threads, another predominantly orange with blue. One with bands of striped woven sections. Final sample has mustard, dark pink, green and yellow bands of colour with open weave sections with decorative semi-circular buttons in gold and black.

This poster, designed by Pat MacKenzie, advertised an exhibition of embroidery examples from 1894 to 1920. The exhibition was held between The Glasgow School Of Art's Mackintosh Museum and Kelvingrove Museum from the 6th of June to the 17th of August 1980. The image used on the front of the poster is an embroidery piece by Ann Macbeth who became the head of needlework and embroidery at The Glasgow School of Art in 1909, and is heavily associated with the "Glasgow Style".
