Lampshade for Library, Glasgow School of Art: Central Cluster- Reconstructed Medium Pendant

Originally, and according to Mackintosh’s preparatory sketches, there were thought to be 53 individual lights in the library, each with punched holes in the inner reflectors which allowed light to pass through blue and purple glass. The central array was made up of 12 small canisters attached to the light frame on the ceiling, with eight medium pendants and five large pendants hanging below. There were an additional twelve medium canisters attached to the coffered ceiling both above and below the library balcony, making 24. Originally there were also four additional medium hanging pendants in each of the south and western window bays, though these four lights, and the medium canister in the librarians office, had all been removed before the fire in 2014, meaning there were 48 in the library. The library was destroyed by the fire, though many metal fragments from the lights were salvaged, allowing twenty eight to be reconstructed from the original metal pieces, eleven to be made from a mix of original and new pieces (composites) and fifteen new lamps created. All the restoration work and shades was undertaken by Rodney French of Lonsdale & Dutch of Edinburgh.

Lampshade for 78 Southpark Avenue

One of a number of shades designed for Mackintosh's flat at 78 Southpark Avenue, Glasgow. Mackintosh used a number of these lampshades in his flat at Southpark Avenue which he bought in 1906 and photos of the interiors show them hanging in the dining room and the drawing room and studio. They are just slightly different versions of the fittings used at Mains Street (originally made for gas) which can be seen hanging in clusters of four in the Annan photos of the drawing room and studio and the bedroom.  About 1919 William Davidson bought the Southpark Avenue flat and some of its furniture from the Mackintoshes, on his death Glasgow University bought it from his sons Hamish and Cameron who presented much of the furniture that had been used in it.

Carpet for The Hill House

Commissioned by Walter Blackie, the carpet was designed for the entrance hall at The Hill House in Helensburgh.

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014, only a small damaged fragment remains.

In 1986 a reproduction of the original Hill House carpet was sponsored by Arthur Anderson and Company and woven by BMK of Kilmarnock for use within the GSA's Mackintosh Room. The reproduction carpet was accurately colour-matched with the original, but woven to a slightly larger scale. A small colour swatch used as the basis for the full-scale reproduction is held by the School's Archives and Collections.

Wall clock for Glasgow School of Art

One of a series of electric slave clocks located through the Glasgow School of Art and run from a central 'master' clock. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010). Installed into Studio 25 following restoration in 2013. Following the fire in the Mackintosh Building in May 2014 it was assessed and conserved in 2019.

Hat, coat and umbrella stand for the Room de Luxe, Willow Tea Rooms

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. Two of the metal coat hooks, both damaged, were salvaged and have undergone conservation and consolidation work. Designed for the Room de Luxe, Willow Tea Rooms, Glasgow. 'Apparently designed some time later than the rest of the furniture for the Willow Tea Room. Only two stands are visible in contemporary photographs (one each side of the gesso panel) but it is probable that another two flanked the fireplace on the opposite side of the room.' At some time the umbrella stand was over painted with a brownish varnish. In 1986 this was removed and the piece repainted with an aluminium-based silver paint. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

Low-backed armchair for the Director's Room, Glasgow School of Art

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.

Designed for the Director's Room, Glasgow School of Art. Twelve chairs were made in 1904 for the GSA, but William Davidson acquired a further two, with six of MC/F/58 for use as dining chairs in the hall at Windyhill. Twelve chairs reupholstered in brown horsehair 1984. One chair on loan from Glasgow University, returned 1984. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

The Governors never used this room for meetings and it was initially used as a studio while space was short in the half-finished building. When the new Board Room was built in the second phase of the building, Mackintosh designed a more elaborate version of this chair for it, MC/F/61. Six chairs reupholstered in brown horsehair 1985, very similar to the original fabric found on one of the chairs. Two remaining chairs reupholstered in 1986. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

Design for a Memorial Fireplace, The Dug-Out, Willow Tea Rooms, Glasgow

Inscribed: This room was opened by Miss Cranston in the year 1917 during the Great European War between the Allied Nations and the Central Powers.The Dug-Out, which Miss Cranston created in the basement of the Willow Tea Rooms was Mackintosh's last work in Glasgow (designed while he was living in London) and develops his new style seen in 78 Derngate. A dramatic interior was created with black ceilings and dark walls highlighted by strong colours in the decorations. The centrepiece was the Memorial Fireplace, decorated with inlaid glass and paintings of the flags of the opposing nations; above the commemorative plaque was a panel of stencilled decoration in chequers, diamonds and triangles, all in the bright colours used in the Derngate frieze. Two interior elevations indicate Mackintosh's schemes for decoration and furniture, some of which survives.
