Sketchbook

A sketchbook of notes and artworks by Mary Ramsay produced during her first year at The Glasgow School of Art, around 1914-1915. This item consists of portraits and life drawings, children's illustrations, lettering, costume designs, studies of ceramic samples, floral patterns, a list of reference books about art and design, and a Little Willie rhyme. Most artworks are in pencil, while some are in ink or paint on paper. Some illustrations have been pasted in from other sources. A number of loose ephemera items are also included in the sketchbook, including postage stamps and a newspaper advert for paint tubes.

A collection of six sketchbooks created by Mary Ramsay, including four from her time as a student at The Glasgow School of Art, one dated to after her studies, and one undated. These sketchbooks feature a variety of subjects and themes, including life drawings, portraits, illustrations, floral patterns, ceramics studies, book designs, card designs, and lettering. Most artworks are pencil on paper, with some also using paint, ink, and pastel. Some sketchbooks include a number of loose ephemera items, such as newspaper cuttings and postage stamps.

Stained glass cartoon for St Mark's Church, Southport

The design depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary on the left side and a young boy (Hartley?) on the right. Design is for the lower section of a window in St Mark's, Southport; dedicated to the memory of Sir William Pickles Hartley of the Primitive Methodist Movement. Inscribed: 'What doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God?'.

Stained glass cartoon for a two light memorial window. Inscribed: 'Come Holy Ghost'. For the church of St Clement and St James, Horsley, near Derby. This window was one of two, two light windows designed for Guthrie and Wells, the Glasgow firm of decorators who began stained glass production in 1884 and won a reputation for first class craftsmanship and always employing excellent designers (beginning in 1887 with Sir James Guthrie). Bell first designed glass for the firm in 1895 when he won the competition for new windows for the Royal Church at Crathie, and he continued to design for them for twenty-three years. In the 1920s he also designed for the City Glass Company, and examples of his work are still in the Glasgow area.

Includes work carried out as part of courses in the Graphics department and on the Section 5 course under Ted Odling. Material spans the entirety of her student career, including final projects and degree show work.

Teaching examples

14 sheets of teaching examples and one title page, assumed to have been compiled as Murphy's portfolio during his career as an art teacher in schools located in Scotland, such as Motherwell RC High School and Coatbridge Secondary School. These teaching materials include pattern designs, graphic designs (possibly for students' school activities), and woodblock printmaking examples. Most items have been marked with the intended level of students as appropriate examples for education.

The Magazine

There are 4 known surviving volumes: The Magazine 1893, The Magazine April 1894, The Magazine November 1894, The Magazine 1896.

The Magazine was a publication of original writings and designs by students from the Glasgow School of Art, Glasgow, Scotland, and their friends. Appearing in 4 volumes between November 1893 and Spring 1896, The Magazine contains text from contributors handwritten by Lucy Raeburn, editor, accompanied by original illustrations. These volumes are the only known copies of The Magazine. In addition to rare, early watercolours and designs by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the volumes contain early designs by Frances MacDonald and Margaret MacDonald, at a stage in their development which has been labelled 'Spook School', and two sets of photographs by James Craig Annan, when he was beginning to establish a reputation at home and abroad. Among other contributors were Janet Aitken, Katherine Cameron, Agnes Raeburn and Jessie Keppie, all of whom enjoyed lengthy careers in art and design.

The Magazine is similar to an album amicorum such as those which originated in the middle of the 16th century among German university students, who collected autographs of their friends and notable persons, sometimes adding coats of arms and illustrations. The Magazine resembled the album amicorum in that contributions were by a close group of students and their friends and is all the more interesting because the illustrations were produced by young people who had a common social background, were trained at the same school, and subjected to the same artistic influences. The contributors were closely linked, some by family, some by romantic attachments and had close social connections.
