Writing desk for Gladsmuir

This item suffered significant damage in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014.

Desk with hinged top, designed for Gladsmuir, Kilmacolm.

The majority of this piece of furniture was lost, however a brass repousse panel plus three handles, all damaged, were salvaged and have undergone conservation and consolidation work. The original item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010).

The Glasgow School of Art metal box

Oblong metal box on fretwork pedestal with four decorative enamel plaques, two ships on the shorter sides, GSA letters and a list of makers on the longer sides.  Remains of hinge and catch suggest missing lid. Makers were: J C Kant; G G Killin; M E Robley;  I T Smith;  E Wilson.

Sphagnum moss sign

Cast metal (probably bronze) commemorative plaque from the Mackintosh building with raised lettering reading, 'To record the use of this building as a sphagnum moss depot. during the Great War and the thanks of the Scottish Branch British Red Cross Society to the generous donors. April 1919.'

Silver teapot

Traditional style hammer worked silver teapot (Edinburgh hallmark, 1982, GSA makers stamp) with heat proof handle and lid knob.  Swan necked spout and hip shaped body.

Silver tankard

Silver tankard with cover. Signed: "London hallmarks for 1799/1800 on body and 1811/12" on cover. Base engraved "Sorley Glasgow". Engraved: "Presented to Francis Henry Newbery with a purse of sovereigns on the occasion of his marriage, by members of the Glasgow School of Art and Haldane Academy, September 1889". Tankard presented to Newbery with matching salver (NMC/452).

Silver plummet, gift to James Fleming

Inscribed silver (Glasgow hallmark) plummet in wooden presentation tray.  Inscription reads: 'This plummet was presented to James Fleming, Chairman of Governors by John Morrison: Wright, on the occasion of the laying of the memorial stone of the Glasgow School of Art, May 25 1898.'

Silver mantle clock

Mackintosh inspired mantel clock made from silver with square face in mother of pearl with clock hands and 12 markers in gold coloured metal. Glass cover which is chipped at the edge and loose from housing. Clock supported on silver block columns with silk decorative panels on the front in pink, green, yellow and blue geometric pattern. All housed in wooden carriage box with label identifying the maker, Helen M C Fedries. Possibly created as a prize piece for the Johnson Matthey sponsored student competition.

Tall, arum lily shaped hammered silver candlestick (Edinburgh hallmark, 1981, makers stamp RD) with textured gilt area at base picking out imaginary trail of molten wax.

Hinged brass box presented to Fra Newbery by former students in celebration of Newbery's 25th anniversary as Director. Inscribed: "From the past students to Fra H Newbery esquire the Director and Headmaster of the Glasgow School of Art on the occasion of the completion of his 25th year in that capacity 20th day of December 1909".
