Lampshade for Library, Glasgow School of Art: Lower Mezzanine - Medium Canister

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. Originally, and according to Mackintosh’s preparatory sketches, there were thought to be 53 individual lights in the library, each with punched holes in the inner reflectors which allowed light to pass through blue and purple glass. The central array was made up of 12 small canisters attached to the light frame on the ceiling, with eight medium pendants and five large pendants hanging below. There were an additional twelve medium canisters attached to the coffered ceiling both above and below the library balcony, making 24. Originally there were also four additional medium hanging pendants in each of the south and western window bays, though these four lights, and the medium canister in the librarians office, had all been removed before the fire in 2014, meaning there were 48 in the library. The library was destroyed by the fire, though many metal fragments from the lights were salvaged.

Wall clock for Glasgow School of Art

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. One of a series of electric slave clocks located through the Glasgow School of Art and run from a central 'master' clock. This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010). Installed into Studio 44 following restoration in 2013.

The library was destroyed by fire on 23 May 2014, though many metal and glass fragments from the lights were subsequently salvaged. Originally, and according to Mackintosh’s preparatory sketches, there were thought to be 53 individual lights in the library, each with punched holes in the inner reflectors which allowed light to pass through blue and purple glass. The central array was made up of 12 small canisters attached to the light frame on the ceiling, with eight medium pendants and five large pendants hanging below. There were an additional twelve medium canisters attached to the coffered ceiling both above and below the library balcony, making 24. Originally there were also four additional medium hanging pendants in each of the south and western window bays, though these four lights, and the medium canister in the librarians office, had all been removed before the fire in 2014, meaning there were 48 in the library. This complete light, constructed from multiple, original parts salvaged from the library was made by Rodney French of Lonsdale and Dutch, Edinburgh. This was the first light reconstructed as part of the restoration of the Library and provided valuable evidence as to how the original lights had been manufactured between 1907-09.

The central array was made up of 12 small canisters attached to the light frame on the ceiling, with eight medium pendants and five large pendants hanging below. There were an additional twelve medium canisters attached to the coffered ceiling both above and below the library balcony, making 24. Originally there were also four additional medium hanging pendants in each of the south and western window bays, though these four lights, and the medium canister in the librarians office, had all been removed before the fire in 2014, meaning there were 48 in the library. This incomplete light, was one of the largest single pieces salvaged from the floor of the library and the decision has been taken not to try and restore it but rather to keep it in its current condition as a visual record of the tragedy.

Wall hanging designed for The Dug-Out, Willow Tea Rooms, Glasgow

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. The canvas relates to smaller watercolours in the Hunterian collection, formerly thought to be textile designs, and to their painted canvas, 'The Little Hills' by Margaret Macdonald. It is likely that they were intended for 'The Dug-Out', though it is not known whether they were ever installed there. Jessie Newbery recalled in 1933, that 'He (Mackintosh) and his wife spent the winter of 1914 painting two large decorations for Miss Cranston'. This would have been in Suffolk, after they had left Glasgow. Although The Dug-Out was not created till 1917-18 it is not unlikely that Miss Cranston was considering the project some years earlier. The canvas was found in the GSA in a single roll in 1981 and was cleaned and mounted on two stretchers.

Step figurative textile design

Abstract forms painted in an arrange of colours and many different forms of paint. Layers of water soluble media have been layered over acrylic based media to create a crackled two-tone effect.

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 15th June 2018.

Original: Michelangelo, c1526-1534. Lorenzo de' Medici (01 Jan 1449-09 Apr 1492) was an Italian statesman and de facto ruler of the Florentine Republic during the Italian Renaissance. Original currently in the Medici Chapel in the Church of San Lorenzo, Florence, Italy.

This item was damaged in the fire in the Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. It underwent conservation and consolidation work in 2016.

Kitchen store jar - currants

This item suffered significant damage in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 23rd May 2014. It was salvaged and has undergone conservation and consolidation work. Round white storage jar with lid. Tan, green, and black transfer desgin on jar with 'Currants' in black near the centre. Thin gold band on the bottom. Lid is white with a gold band.

Poster for the printed textiles degree show

This poster advertised the work of graduating printed textile students exhibiting as part of The Glasgow School Of Art's annual degree show. The exhibition was entitled '13 Printed Textile Designers' and was held in the second floor of the Assembly building between the 7th and 18th of June. This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. Textile conservation was completed in 2019.

Ten figures in various reclining poses, printed/hand painted on textile and mounted on board. The figure outlines are printed in a dark brown/black, whilst their bodies are filled and shaded in a red-ochre and dark peach (possibly hand-painted).

Bedspread of heavy-weight beige fabric with rust coloured applique borders with green and cream needlework. Table runner

White linen and embroidery possibly made by Daisy McGlashan. The design and technique show the influence of Jessie Newbery's teaching. The table runner has the number "1911" printed on one edge in ink which could refer to the year it was made. This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. Textile conservation was completed in 2019.

Abstract textile design

Abstract forms are painted onto a sheet of tracing paper and adhered to a pink ink painted surface. A fibrous semi-transparent material is stitched onto the surface of the paper outlining the forms in blue thread. Some pieces of the tracing paper and material have been deducted in the shape of the figures to reveal the painted ground.

"wax line. earthy colour- small areas of bright colour".

Weaving Sample

Closely woven cotton fabric with printed warp threads and jagged design of subtle gradations in colour from orange through to red, blue, green to orange again. Second section with contrasting weft colours and regular pale yellow wefts giving a striped effect in shades of orange, pink, green and blue. Thicker cream coloured yarn has been introduced to form a line and zig zag geometric design over the coloured weave. This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. Textile conservation was completed in 2019.

Plaster cast of Laocoon and his Sons

This item was lost in the fire in The Mackintosh Building at The Glasgow School of Art on 15th June 2018. All that remains is a fragment of a hand.

Original: This statue group was found in 1506 on the Esquiline Hill in Rome and immediately identified as the Laocoon described by Pliny the Elder as a masterpiece of the sculptors of Rhodes: Agesander, Athenodoros and Polydorus around 40-30 BC. It shows the Trojan priest Laocoon and his sons Antiphantes and Thymbraeus being strangled by sea serpents. In 1587 Giovanni Battista Armenini's treatise on painting and recommended all students to draw from the casts of the finest statues in Rome- 'the Laocoon, the Hercules, the Apollo, the Great Torso....' of the Belvedere. Listed in first catalogue as Greco-Roman and that the original is located in the Vatican. Original currently in the collection of the Vatican Museums, Rome, Italy.

This item was damaged in the fire in the Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. It underwent conservation and consolidation work in 2016.
