Whyte Family Photographs

Collection of photographs of Kath Whyte and her family; including childhood portraits of Kath, photographs of Kath as a child with her mother and other relatives, and photographs of other Whyte family members.

There are two albums of black and white family photographs which include photographs of Girl Guide camp, Lunan Bay, class picnics, Dalkeith, Jamshedpur, and Art School in Aberdeen.

Also included is a picture postcard of the Viper troopship that Kath Whyte's father, Henry Smith Whyte, sailed with during the war (sent to Kath by her father) and two news cuttings related to the death of Kath Whyte's father, Henry Smith Whyte, in 1934: one taken from 'Guide' 7 April 1934 and the other featuring a picture of the changes made to the crossing where he died.

Personal photographs

A collection of black & white and colour photographs of Kath Whyte, her family and friends in later life.

Includes a framed colour photograph of Kath with her sister, Betty, and another friend.

Also included is a collection of photographs taken by Kath Whyte on trips to various locations such as Applecross, Balmacara, Skye, etc. Mainly landscape photos, but also includes some photos of Kath Whyte and friends [these photographs are bundled].

Notes and notebooks

A collection of Kath Whyte's notebooks and loose notes which relate largely to embroidery and weaving history and techniques.

The notebooks contain:

  • outlines of talks
  • teaching notes
  • notes on embroidery and weaving techniques
  • instructions for making various items, e.g. slippers & gloves
  • history of embroidery notes
  • history of tapestry notes
  • expenses
  • notes on exhibitions
  • Christmas card and present lists etc.

Some patterns and sketches are included.

One folder of loose notes and one folder of notebooks relate to lectures and talks on the subject of embroidery and weaving given by Kath Whyte to various groups and institutions at locations in Britain and Canada.

One folder of loose notes contains rough notes and drafts for articles and reviews written by Kath Whyte on various topics such as:

Drawings and designs

A collection Kath Whyte's drawings, sketches and embroidery designs.

Consists of loose sketches and sketchbooks which contain sketches and drawings done in various mediums such as pencil, pastel, and watercolour. Subjects include florals, trees, birds, cats, mermaids, boats, ecclesiastical figures, death masks, fashion, and weaving designs; etc. Some sketchooks also contain notes.

Included are design drawings for: Creation pulpit fall, 1959; chair for Eaglesham Church, c1961; Mayfield cloth, 1972; Old Parish Church Gourock, 1973; double bow & silver cross, 1973; Live Coal, not dated; long lecturn fall for Cathcart South, 1978/79; studies for last piece of work, early 1980s; Prestonkirk Pulpit Fall (includes some correspondence), 1984; and poppies panel in V&A collection, not dated.

There are a number of outsize folders which contain design material for:

  • "Dove Fall"; includes paper dove cutouts, design on tracing paper, postcards and cuttings, and illustrations of grouse and owls.
  • "Tay Bridge Stole"; includes news cuttings, textile sample, photographs, and design drawing.
  • Design for quilted panel for Netherlee Figure.
  • Folder of lettering and graphic work , life drawings, and "proposed design for embroidery 'Rosemount', Linlithgow"; including a Norwegian Art Treasures poster, and piece of graphic work signed by "E. Younger".
  • Folder of designs for "Hand of God"; including a folder labelled "Queen Mother's, Yorkhill 1971".
  • Designs for Arbroath Panel, 1943 and Design for Communion Cloth for Shawlands.
  • Designs for St Martins Church, Port Glasgow, 1959.
  • Folder entitled "Architecture & Interior Decoration" but containing portrait and life drawings done in pencil.
  • Folder of material relating to "Tree of Light"; includes a scenic watercolour signed Leslie Bewes 12/1/83.
  • Folder of designs for Life Force Lectern, Cathcart South, Celestia, Last Supper etc.

Also included is a folder of cuttings from "The Scottish Annual & Braemar Gathering Book" featuring Kath Whyte artwork; as well as some other artwork.

Embroidery and weave samples

A collection of embroidery and weave samples done by Kath Whyte and her students.

Includes "making colour move" samplers produced with members of the Embroiderers' Guild and block/grid counted samplers done post-retirement.

Also included are a ringbinder of Cults (38/T/1/3) weave samples, weave samples by Mrs Mairet (38/T/2) and cuttings from a handwoven cape by Hannah Frew Paterson (38/T/2/1).
