Cream Curtain

Cream pleated top curtain with an embroidered design of flowers and leaves. This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. Textile conservation was completed in 2019.

Fish cape sleeved jacket

Cape sleeved jacket with long, mermaid style fishtail made of an iridescent synthetic fabric lined with green synthetic silk and decorated with strands of couched wool in a fish scale design.  Thought to have been made and used as a costume for a masque or play at The Glasgow School of Art in the early-mid 20th century.

Floral tapestry rug

Tapestry woven floral rug in acid colours featuring a flower-filled central medallion on a red and orange background with similar serpentine floral border. "8037 A7" stencilled on reverse.

Folder containing coloured woven and embroidered samples, range of layered samples showing scrim with pulled thread effects. Printed oval label on back of some samples with 'Dobby and No'. Several coloured layer of scrim in each sample. Printed black and white newscutting of a butterfly also contained in folder (x 9 pieces).

Georgian Waistcoat

English. Fine white corded silk waistcoat with floral border incorporating the rose, thistle and shamrock. Pockets have embroidered flaps. Part of the spotted background has been unpicked. Shows influence of Chinese embroideries. This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014. Textile conservation was completed in 2019.

German weave notebook

This item was damaged in the fire in GSA's Mackintosh Building on 23rd May 2014 and was conserved in 2018-19. The digital images attached to this record are of stencils which were loose inside the front cover of the book, and not pages of the book itself.

Hanging

Large double-faced hanging in twill weave with a design of vertical stripes in the upper half and aquarium fish behind a grid in the lower half. Woven in cream-coloured thread with a glittering effect, and black threads to create the design. It also has grommets for hanging.

Danish. Traditional work on natural linen incorporating drawn thread work and embroidery in satin-stitch. Relies for its effect on the changes of texture of the embroidery . Design based on stylised flower and plant forms.

Jumpsuit

Striped cotton jumpsuit in cream, light and dark green, light and dark lilac, and khaki.  The design of the garment suggests that the material was dyed to suit. Strapless fitted bodice with darts opening to wide legged trousers which gather at the ankles in a decorative thread weave cuff. Lace tie fastening on the front of the bodice with braided cord made from coloured threads that match the material. The garment demonstrates a variety of pattern cutting and construction skills and was probably made for a Glasgow School of Art fashion show.
