Scotland Street School, North Elevation

Free hand sketch showing the north elevation of Scotland Street School including some architectural descriptions, for example, "scale has been a major design factor in this building for children, windows diminish in height as they rise from the floor, and the wall has been set back to lessen the effect of three stories. Not every room in a building has the same height, each houses a different function and should be designed with that function in mind".

Project 4: St. Ninian's episcopal church, Isle of Whithorn, elevations

Materials related to project 6 to design St. Ninian's episcopal church at Isle of Whithorn includes:

  • location plan, scale 1:2500
  • plan, roof plan, sections AA, BB, CC, and DD, all in scale 1:100.

These architectural drawings are on cartridge paper show designs for a small project using vernacular construction methods and materials in a new way. The architect's idea is to use stone material to build thick walls with curved corners supporting a wood panelled roof which gives a design a sense of harmony with the surrounding landscape.

Material created for summer project relating to the study of the north window of The Old West Kirk at Greenock including drawings of the plan, section, inside elevation, and outside elevation, all are in scale of 1:20.
This window built by Johnne Schaw in AD.1591 and transferred to present site in AD.1926.

The cross section shows the floor height and the main staircase. The architect used the ceiling of the main entrance to add some decoration using some hanging plants to give the central volume a sense of environmental quality effect. The third floor has four symmetrical flats. The main entrance to Flat 4P leads to two bedrooms and a staircase to the upper floor which consists an open living room/dining room with an open kitchen and two bathrooms. The cross section shows the main structural elements of the building construction system. On the fourth plan the roof of flat 4P appears with its skylight windows.

Living with the river

Material related to studying examples of living with the river such as a lake dwellings from Japan, Kohama 6000 B.C describing the strategic reasons behind the design of such community dwellings. All the drawings are freehand sketches on tracing paper showing the site plans from an iron age village addressing the way to reach these dwellings from mainland by canoes. Another example of living with the river is the pile dwellings or the Saigon Shacks where they built on piles raised above the water because there is not enough room on the mainland for more houses.

Leaflet for an exhibition called "Inclined to Design"

Leaflet for an exhibition of work by four local students architects from the Mackintosh School of Architecture. The is called "Inclined to Design", and the leaflet explains the concept behind the exhibit which is built on the idea of architectural drawings as paintings and sculptures rather than just as end products for buildings, following London and New York architectural drawings that sold as paintings. The leaflet has the signatures of the four architects (students): Alan Fullarton, Brain Hendry, Christopher Platt, and Richard Robb. The leaflet made by a printed white paper attached to hard sheet.
