Collection of some of Kath Whyte's student work which includes:

  • "The Bamboo Cutter and the Moon Maiden", a manuscript featuring decorative lettering (presumably from Kath's time at Gray's).
  • A sketchbook inscribed 'Kathleen Whyte, Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen Oct. 1929' containing portraits, life drawings, and landscapes done in pencil, watercolour and pastel.
  • "Betty", a framed and mounted lino-cut; 1930.
  • Loose sketches from Kath's time at Gray's.

Glasgow School of Art Photographs

A collection of mainly black & white, and some colour, photographs relating to Kath Whyte's time at Glasgow School of Art.

Contains photos of her students' work, including Dip and Post Dip shows, 1951-1965. Many photographs have been annotated and pictured works include those of: Kirsty McFarlane, Doreen Sisson, Nan Cameron, Moira Duncan, Marion Gracie, Margaret Kirkland, Joan Horne, Jack Lindsay, Patricia Miller, Mary Hughes, Julia Murray-Zmijewski and others.

Includes a scrapbook with the inscription, "My DEAR girls...!", which contains black & white, as well as colour, photographs of Kath Whyte and her students; taken mainly in GSA studios. Some photographs have been annotated and pictured students include: Alex Conway, Linda Smith, Carol Jones, Sheila Melville, Mary Metheson, Anne Ross, Isabel MacGregor, Joyce Lauden, Marilyn Hunter, Caroline Henderson and others.

Also includes a photo from the GSA Christmas ball; 1962.

Folder containing Kath Whyte's samples & records on visual disturbances caused by a lens implants. This includes a letter from Shelia to Kath outlining discussion with ophthalmologist about Kath’s drawings, pen drawings on clear plastic, two texts entitled ‘Record of “Extra-Visual Perception” as seen after a cataract operation on the left eye- before spectacles –", one piece of card with preserved flower buds wrapped in plastic, one multimedia artwork, two cards bearing the text ‘Light Experiments - after eye operations, 1977’ and five pages of abstract pen and pencil drawings.

  • 1&2. Both contain 2 pieces of grey linen on cream card showing variations of hemstitch, straight stitch, herringbone stitch, drawn thread and 4 side stitch.
    1. Piece of grey paper divided into 4 sections with floral templates. Pale blue linen sampler with embroidered flowers in blue and white thread. Part of Needlework Development Scheme from 1930s.
    1. Folded piece of grey paper with 2 white paper templates on each side. 2 linen embroidered samples. 4 small square designs on back in blue biro. "NDS 1950's" written on back.
    1. Piece of folded blue paper with 3 cut paper templates. Large embroidered maltese cross with paper template on inside.

Folder including 9 cards of woven samples

Folder containing coloured woven and embroidered samples, range of layered samples showing scrim with pulled thread effects. Printed oval label on back of some samples with 'Dobby and No'. Several coloured layer of scrim in each sample. Printed black and white newscutting of a butterfly also contained in folder (x 9 pieces).

Floral cross embroidery and paper templates

Piece of blue paper, folded into four 'pages'. One page has three white paper templates glued to it, which possibly resemble flowers. On one page is glued a white template resembling an abstract shape with similarities to a Maltese cross. The adjoining page features the same design, embroidered in white, dark grey and green on grey fabric.
