This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010). Tall, shelved unit for use in the Library at Glasgow School of Art. Perhaps originally kept in the book store on the mezzanine floor above the Library. Nothing about their appearance could be said to date specifically from c1910, so it is possible that they were made at the time of the first phase of the School (c1899) to provide temporary storage (Roger Billcliffe).

The Ingram Street Tea Rooms were purchased by Glasgow Corporation in 1951 for £25,000 and were then rented out as various shops and warehouses. 'One of the sturdiest and most successful small chairs designed by Mackintosh. The chair was used in the Chinese Room in the late 1940s but there is no record of it being specifically designed for it.' (Roger Billcliffe). The two chairs in the Museum of Modern Art collection (NY) originally belonged to GSA and were donated in 1958 by then director, Douglas Percy Bliss. Commissioned by Walter Blackie, the carpet was designed for the entrance hall at The Hill House in Helensburgh.

In 1986 a reproduction of the original Hill House carpet was sponsored by Arthur Anderson and Company and woven by BMK of Kilmarnock for use within the GSA's Mackintosh Room. The reproduction carpet was accurately colour-matched with the original, but woven to a slightly larger scale. A small colour swatch used as the basis for the full-scale reproduction is held by the School's Archives and Collections.

This item was assessed for conservation in 2010 as part of the Mackintosh Conservation and Access Project (2006-2010). Designed for the Willow Tea Rooms, Glasgow. These chairs were 'the most successful solution of Mackintosh's attempts to use traditional, vernacular designs' (Roger Billcliffe). However they evidently proved too fragile in use, for all the surviving examples have had an additional cross piece fixed to the top of the uprights (apparently at an early date) to support them. This chair was used in conjunction with the low boxy chair as the main seating unit in the Willow Tea Rooms.

Jessie Newbery recalled in 1933, that 'He (Mackintosh) and his wife spent the winter of 1914 painting two large decorations for Miss Cranston'. This would have been in Suffolk, after they had left Glasgow. Although The Dug-Out was not created till 1917-18 it is not unlikely that Miss Cranston was considering the project some years earlier. The canvas was found in the GSA in a single roll in 1981 and was cleaned and mounted on two stretchers.

The square cut-outs on the legs echo the similar arrangements of squares on the panel dividing the fitted seating in the Billiards Room. (Roger Billcliffe).
