History

Douglas Kenneth McKenzie Hamilton was born in Shahjahanpur, Rajasthan, India on the 22nd October 1895. He was one of four children (Frances born 1893, Jane H born 1894, and Kate H born 1897) of Jeannie Hogg (née Johnston), who died of acute meningitis in India in 1897, and James Hamilton, who died in Glasgow in September 1922. Hamilton was sent back to Britain from India for his education and began his career in stained glass in April 1911, under the tutorage of Alf Webster. Hamilton attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1913 to 1914, as an evening student of design, while working as a stained glass painter, however he could not continue with his studies as he went to serve with the Scottish Rifles (Cameroonians) in 1914, beginning in Gallipoli in April 1915. Whilst serving he received the Victory Medal, British War Medal and 1915 Star medal, and by the end of the war he was a 2nd Lieutenant. He returned to The Glasgow School of Art from 1919-1921, as an afternoon student of drawing and painting. There are many examples of his work in Scotland, including the left aisle window, 'The Draught of Fishes' at Dalziel St. Andrew's Parish Church, Motherwell, the South Transept windows at Merrylea Parish Church, Glasgow, and the Service Window at Hyndland Church. He married Jane Morrison Walker (1896-1983) on the 19th August 1929. He died on the 30th March 1959, on the Isle of Arran. Hamilton is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
