History
May Dryden Dickie, born 10/05/1900, is registered as a student of The Glasgow School of Art between 1917 and 1920. She lived in Shawlands throughout this period.
In 1917 Dickie's name is one of a number which have been bracketed with the note 'selected students from the continuation classes to come on next session'. This tells us that Dickie had been studying art in an affiliated institute with the aim of gaining entry to The Glasgow School of Art, and had been successful. However, it is not clear whether she was actually in attendance at The Glasgow School of Art at any point in 1917-18. She is noted as having undertaken afternoon classes in Drawing and Painting throughout this session, and has been allocated a registration number by The Glasgow School of Art. It is unknown whether students were given registration numbers by The Glasgow School of Art whilst they undertook continuation classes within other institutions. We do know that in 1918-19 Dickie attended afternoon classes at The Glasgow School of Art in Drawing and Painting, and in 1919-20 evening classes in Drawing and Painting.
The 1901 Scottish census tells us that May D Dickie (of Stevenson Drive, Shawlands) was daughter to John Dickie and Jessie C D Dickie. She also lived with Jeanie D Dickie (4 years) and Margaret C Dickie (3 years).
