Davidson, Charles L

Charles Lamb Davidson was born in Brechin on 4th July 1897, one of 5 children (Alexander Ritchie, Mary Edith, Thomas, and Walter D) of Helen and Charles Davidson, a monumental sculptor of stone and marble who attended the Glasgow School of Art in 1880-1882. Charles L Davidson attended The Glasgow School of Art from 1914 to 1917, and again in 1920 to 1922. During the First World War, Davidson served as a Captain in the Seaforth Highlanders. His brother Alexander also served with the Seaforth Highlanders in the 3rd Battalion, and he died in 1916 while serving as a lieutenant in Sannaiyat, Mesopotamia (Iraq). After the war Charles Davidson worked as a cartoonist for the Glasgow Evening Times, as well as exhibiting paintings at both the Glasgow Institute and the Royal Scottish Academy, and designing stained glass and interiors for Guthrie and Wells. In 1926 he was working as a decorative artist, and married art teacher Janet Frame Miller of Hamilton. He died on 23rd Jan 1948, in Thorntonhill, East Kilbride of cardiac failure. Davidson is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
