Frederick Leslie Cooper was born in Glasgow on 10th of September 1894, one of four children of Freidericke (née Heitzman) and Frederick James Cooper, an electrical wire jointer. Cooper lived with his family in Shawlands, Glasgow and attended St. Ninian's Church where he was confirmed aged 17 and where he is also commemorated on the war memorial for the church. Cooper commenced his studies at The Glasgow School of Art in 1911, initially part time as a student of drawing and painting before becoming a full time student in 1913. He resigned from his studies during the 1914/15 academic session to join the Territorials. During WW1, he served as a Sapper with the Royal Engineers. After WW1 ended, he returned to The Glasgow School of Art in 1919 as a day student funded by the Ministry of Labour, before continuing part time as an evening student until 1923 while working as an art teacher. In 1926 he married Helen Bowie Frame. He remained in the Glasgow area and continued painting, in particular in oils and watercolour, exhibiting on seven occasions at the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts. Fred L Cooper is commemorated on The Glasgow School of Art's First World War Roll of Honour.
